Dragon’s Dogma 2 is already a major commercial success for Capcom, with worldwide sales of 2.5 million copies in the 11 days after its release.
The huge RPG was released on March 22, 2024, and is already selling well for the publisher. Hype surrounding the returning cult classic jumped before release and strong reviews propelled the title to sales records despite a disgruntled segment of gamers. Reviews have praised the game for its open-world gameplay, albeit with some criticism directed toward a lack of enemy variety.
The sprawling RPG is being widely held among the best open-world games since the release of Elden Ring. Fans waiting for the Shadow of The Erdtree expansion for FromSoftware’s juggernaut are seemingly well-served by Dragon’s Dogma 2. Though the game isn’t hitting the astronomical figures that Elden Ring did, Capcom is still likely feeling quite good about its numbers thus far.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 hits 2.5 million copies sold
On April 2, Capcom announced that Dragon’s Dogma 2 hit 2.5 million copies sold worldwide since its launch.
Dragon’s Dogma 2’s 2.5 million sales bring the franchise’s total sales to 10 million copies, per a press release. The first game, Dragon’s Dogma, has sold around 7.5 million copies since it launched in 2012. The number also includes the sales for the expanded Dark Arisen edition released in 2013. The first game was initially available on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 with PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC receiving ports in 2016-2019.
Dragon’s Dogma took around a month to reach sales of 1 million units, while Dragon’s Dogma 2 more than doubled that number in less than half the time. The figures compare favorably to almost every title on the market, an impressive feat given how much of the discourse surrounding the game was negative.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 sales boom despite DLC controversy
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is seeing big sales figures despite its microtransactions controversy and performance issues.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 launched with microtransactions that angered fans, but the title still managed to remain on the top-selling charts. On PC, the game had a resoundingly negative rating on Steam, which shifted to “Mixed” at time of publication. The controversy surrounding the RPG was odd, as Capcom has has taken a similar approach to DLC with multiple major releases in recent years.
Despite these issues, the RPG clocked an impressive 228,585 peak concurrent players on Steam. The sprawling open-world RPG is already Capcom’s biggest single-player game launch on Steam.
Capcom also surveyed players about their experience with Dragon’s Dogma 2 and inquired about potential upcoming DLC. Given the game’s sales success, a substantial expansion will inevitably be released for the title.
