With the January 2024 Xbox Game Pass lineup in the works, players are wondering if Baldur’s Gate 3 might soon be part of the roster.
Baldur’s Gate 3 was the prestigious winner of the top Game Awards title in 2023, opening up speculation on whether this D&D-inspired turn-based RPG has any chance in showing up on the Game Pass list. Amidst these discussions, an accidental announcement through the Game Pass service’s app leaked an exciting possibility.
This early revelation has everyone riled up about Baldur’s Gate’s potential launch on Game Pass. The question is, which of the franchise’s games were accidentally revealed for the Game Pass, and how did that leak happen?
What was the Baldur’s Gate Game Pass leak?
Users across social media reported this week that Xbox Game Pass subscribers with the service app on their phones received notification about Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 being part of the Game Pass.
However, this notification simply takes viewers to the related store page. Given that this is the second time this accidental push notification occurred, with the first being in August 2023, it seems less likely that it was an innocent mistake.
This notification leak for the not-yet-official announcement detailed that the pair of classic role-playing games would soon be coming to Game Pass.
Given that the classic Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 launched back in 1998 and 2000 respectively, these two games and the current Baldur’s Gate 3 follow completely different D&D rules and formats.
While the classic two games from the franchise follow Advanced Dungeon & Dragons rules based on the game’s second edition, BG3 is based on D&D 5th Edition, which is more compatible with the current TTRPG rulesets.
Is Baldur’s Gate 3 finally coming to Xbox Game Pass?
While everyone is excited about the accidental announcement about the possibilities of Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 on Xbox Game Pass, there is no news about Baldur’s Gate 3 specifically.
Larian Studios founder and Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Swen Vincke has been firm in saying that he does not plan on bringing Baldur’s Gate 3 to Game Pass, despite persistent rumors and requests among the game’s fans.
The independent studio reportedly had no intention of adding Baldur’s Gate 3 to Game Pass from the beginning, and this hasn’t changed yet. But it remains possible that it could change in the future, and the addition of the original Baldur’s Gate games could be a step further in that direction.
