The CEO of the studio behind Baldur’s Gate 3 had made a statement explaining why the game won’t ever come to Xbox Game Pass and reiterated the company’s plans for DLC.
Xbox Game Pass has seen some huge day-one releases since the service first launched in 2017. Xbox first-party titles appearing is now standard and Activision-Blizzard titles may follow suit. Several AAA third-party titles have also gotten “day one” treatment, including Lies of P and the upcoming Persona 3 Reload. However, one game that won’t be coming to Xbox Game Pass, possibly ever, is the 2023 Game of the Year winner Baldur’s Gate 3.
When chatting with IGN, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke stated that Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t ever be coming to Xbox’s subscription service. He also explained his reasoning behind the team making this decision, and it makes it likely that the game won’t be coming to any similar subscription service either.
Is Baldur’s Gate 3 coming to Xbox Game Pass?
According to Larian Studios CEO, Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t ever come to Xbox Game Pass, and it might not come to other subscription-based services either.
With Baldur’s Gate 3’s launch on Xbox, fans were wondering if the game would make its way to Xbox’s subscription service, but that possibility has been shot down, In a recent interview, Swen Vincke stated that the studio decided to not add the game to Game Pass “from the get-go.”
“We made a big game, so I think there’s a fair price to be paid for that, and I think that that is okay…This is what allows us to continue making other games,” Vincke told IGN.
According to his statement, it seems as though the game might not be added to any other subscription-based service either, including Nvidia Geforce Now or PlayStation Plus tiers. Wouldn’t be unusual for Larian, however. Its past titles like Divinity: Original Sin don’t appear on Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus.
Despite the precedent, some Xbox fans expressed frustration over the game not being available on the service. This sparked discussion over the nature of the service, and other related topics.
Will there be DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3?
There is currently no indication that a DLC expansion for Baldur’s Gate 3 is in development, and Larian Studios has indicated that there won’t be any paid DLC for the game. The studio has indicated that it wants to do more with the game.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Deluxe Edition and Digital Deluxe Edition are confirmed to be coming in 2024. They will bring a slew of in-game content including an item pack, more songs, and a dice skin. However, fans are hoping for a DLC that includes more playable content. That’s seemingly won’t come in the form of DLC.
“We don’t charge you any micro-transactions on top of it, so you get what you pay for. Upfront it’s a big, meaty game. So I think that should be able to exist as it is,” Vincke said while discussing Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox Game Pass.
Although no information on any other Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC or expansion has been given to fans, the game continues to get injections of new content through its patches. This applies both to the game itself and to other services, like a Christmas-themed interactive advent calendar on the website.
The only hint of what a future large-scale DLC might hold is the cut content mined from the game’s files. If the studio decides to make a DLC, there are some bits and pieces of characters and scenarios that could be implemented or finished.
