Larian Studios has teased both physical copies and an Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 coming soon, and the company gave strong hints regarding when fans can look forward to getting exact details.
Ever since Baldur’s Gate 3 was first released, it has stood as one of the hottest topics in gaming. Not only did it turn heads on launch with its great reviews, but it also kept the industry’s attention in a year of smash hit releases, going as far as dominating the 2023 Golden Joystick Awards despite facing competition from The Legend of Zelda, Diablo, Alan Wake, and other storied gaming franchises. The game was first released exclusively via digital distribution on Windows, with the PlayStation 5 and macOS releases following soon after.
So far, there hasn’t been any physical release of Baldur’s Gate 3, and Xbox fans are still waiting for the game. That might be changing soon. Although a physical Japanese version is slated to release on December 21, Larian Studios dropped some hints regarding physical media and an Xbox version. Both might be coming out very soon.
Will Baldur’s Gate 3 come to Xbox?
Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming to Xbox in December 2023.
At the moment, Xbox owners are still unable to play the game on their consoles but that’s changing soon. Larian Studios confirmed an Xbox release for Baldur’s Gate 3 before the end of 2023.
The release of the Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 has been slowed due to performance issues with the Xbox Series S. Microsoft requires developers and publishers to maintain consistent features across the Xbox Series S and X, despite the Series S console having lower specs. Though the game performed well on the Xbox Series X, struggles to get Baldur’s Gate 3 to run smoothly on the Series S during co-op play. Microsoft’s refusal to allow the game to have disparate features resulted in an extended delay in its release.
Those issues have been solved over time. One of the developers for Baldur’s Gate 3 revealed new optimizations to the game while working on the Xbox port, something that may finally result in the game arriving on the platform. These optimizations could also result in improvements to the existing version of the game as well.
Can you buy a physical copy of Baldur’s Gate 3?
Larian Studios hinted that a physical release of Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming out soon. The game is digital-exclusive as of this writing.
In the same tweet discussing an Xbox release, Larian Studios also discussed physical copies of the game which has hardcore fans looking forward to putting Baldur’s Gate 3 on their physical shelf. Although not confirmed, many fans are assuming that the official release date will likely be on the day of The Game Awards.
Given how Baldur’s Gate 3 has been nominated for eight categories at The Game Awards, more than any other game aside from Alan Wake 2, the title is already expected to take center stage. Having an announcement for both physical versions and an Xbox version would undoubtedly make The Game Awards an event to remember for Baldur’s Gate 3 fans.
