Baldur’s Gate 3 might see the next patch bring significant performance improvements on all platforms, and might finally see the game capable of running on Xbox consoles.
Larian Studios is at work making the Xbox port for its critically and commercially acclaimed RPG. The game launched on PC in early access almost three years ago and launched fully in August. Since then, the developers have released several major updates. The patches bring optimization, performance improvements, several gameplay adjustments, and more.
The next is being discussed as one of the biggest yet. The studio discussed a breakthrough in terms of the game’s performance, bringing greater stability as well as a possible ticket to Xbox consoles.
Baldur’s Gate 3’s next patch may finally bring the game to Xbox consoles
A Baldur’s Gate 3 developer discussed a 34% reduction in VRAM usage for the Xbox Series S console, which will also bode well for other platforms.
Swen Vincke shared the good news via a tweet with two graphs. The graphs show how the Xbox Series S port of Baldur’s Gate 3 now loads much faster. The Xbox Series S is the most restrictive console in the current generation lineup, with just 10 GB of RAM. The RAM stores the game and is used as VRAM, further restricting the developers. Any gains in performance for the platform could potentially result in the game running better on other, more powerful platforms.
The graphs start from September, showing how the game uses around 5.2 GB for storage and 3.5 GB for VRAM. After the improvements in November, the game uses 4.7 GB and 2.3 GB, respectively. While the RAM usage reduction is a good 10%, the 34% VRAM reduction is a massive win for the developers.
When is Baldur’s Gate‘s next patch coming?
According to a developer, Baldur’s Gate 3 will see a performance patch soon.
Vincke states that more work is left to be done, but the team is very close now. The tweet could mean that Xbox fans will be able to dive into the expansive RPG sooner rather than later. Other platforms might also benefit from the RAM and VRAM optimizations. PlayStation players have reported memory leak issues, forcing them to restart the game after some time.
There is no confirmed release date announced for the patch yet. A recent leak suggests that Larian Studios will add a new brutal Honour mode in the next patch. Larian Studios has yet to announce the Xbox Series release date as well.
