CD Projekt Red is considering licensing its The Witcher and Cyberpunk IPs for mobile games, making it possible for Geralt, V, and other trademark characters to be playable on smartphones.
Many game companies are looking at the untapped potential of gaming on mobile platforms. Call of Duty: Mobile, Warzone Mobile, Valorant, and even EA FC Mobile are bringing huge franchises to the portable platform. The Polish company is working hard on The Witcher 4, but is also open to expanding and licensing its biggest properties to third-party developers.
The Witcher making an appearance on smartphones could turn out to be profitable for CD Projekt Red. The franchise’s last game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, is a fantasy RPG based on the works of Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. The game was released in 2015 and is considered one of the best role-playing games of all time. Could there one day soon be a mobile version of the game?
Is CDPR making The Witcher for mobile?
CDPR isn’t currently making a mobile version of The Witcher, but the company is certainly interested in expanding the franchise in new directions including mobile.
The publisher held an earnings conference for FY2023 earnings, and one attendee inquired about licensing CDPR’s IPs to third parties to make mobile games. Joint CEO Michal Nowakowski replied that the publisher is considering the option but has nothing concrete to yet announce.
“The answer is yes, we are considering such a move. In fact, we were pursuing, through conversations, opportunities like that,” Nowakowski said.
Nowakowski was then asked how it would work from a business standpoint, and if it would involve profit-sharing agreements or a simple one-off license fee.
“As for a one-off or other business model related to any such potential partnership, we would not comment on the specifics here,” Nowakowski said. “There is [currently] nothing in place that we’re talking about.”
Is The Witcher 3 going to release on mobile?
There is no confirmation that a mobile version of The Witcher 3 is currently in the works, but the company is looking to invest in the platform and that may include a future release.
CD Projekt Red is no stranger to mobile games. Previously, digital card game Gwent was released as a standalone title on smartphones after being introduced by The Witcher 3. Thronebreaker is a single-player role-playing game set in the world of The Witcher and utilizing Gwent for its gameplay. Both games’ mobile releases were received positively by fans and critics alike.
The Witcher: Monster Slayer was CD Projekt Red‘s latest mobile game. It was a geolocation-based RPG released in July 2021, but it was shut down in June 2023.
Given these recent releases, a full Witcher game on mobile platforms is not far from reality. The company might be interested in releasing direct ports of the original Witch trilogy on mobile platforms.
