Arc System Works has officially announced Double Dragon Revive’s release date after details unofficially emerged.
The beat ‘em up genre is making a big comeback with revivals for classic franchises like Streets of Rage and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Alongside these are relative newcomers like Swery and Suda51’s upcoming Hotel Barcelona. Arcade classic Double Dragon debuted in 1987 and became a cultural phenomenon. Double Dragon Revive, is set to revive the franchise for modern audiences.
The last game in the series, Double Dragon 4, was released in 2017. The fourth installment was developed with the help of the original creators, including game director Kishimoto Toshihisa. Now, Arc Systems Works will take the reins for the next installment.
Double Dragon Revive release date and platforms confirmed
Double Dragon Revive will be released in 2025 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. No exact release date was given.
The developers claim the new Double Dragon Revive game will have controls and balance refined for the modern era. Old-school titles had simple controls but required timing and strict spacing to deal with enemies. The modern game, while going 3D, will still retain the classic elements but will require “adaptation and variety” as it’s “more than a simple button-masher.”
Double Dragon Revive will also require some strategy to take on the goons. Players must learn enemy patterns and find the best time to attack. Just like the classic titles, levels will be littered with power-ups and weapons to tilt the battle in the player’s favor.
Who is making Double Dragon Revive?
Double Dragon Revive is being developed by Yuke’s and will be published by Arc System Works.
Yuke’s is almost entirely known for its pro wrestling sims. It was long at the helm of WWE video games from WWF Smackdown in 2000 to WWE 2K19 in 2018. After splitting from 2K Games, it returned to pro wrestling sims in 2023 with AEW Fight Forever. Arc System Works acquired the Double Dragon IP back in 2015. The company developed famous fighting games like the excellent Guilty Gear Strive and Dragon Ball FighterZ.
The Double Dragon Revive release date announcement accompanied a short trailer as well. The trailer showed Billy Lee and Jimmy Lee in action, fighting against various goons before clashing with the main boss.
