The long-awaited 2.0 update is coming to Fear and Hunger 2: Termina, and a lot of its content has been officially revealed.

Both games in the Fear and Hunger series are good, but they’re also very different. A lot of the most unique aspects of the original game were left behind in Fear and Hunger 2 to make for a more streamlined RPG experience. While it still has a great deal of character, many lament the changes that were made to the formula.

The Fear and Hunger 2: Termina update will bring many of those features back, while adding some extra wrinkles of its own. Here’s what’s going to be included in the game.

Everything coming in the Fear and Hunger 2: Termina 2.0 update

Fear and Hunger 2: Termina is set to add a number of new features and locales. Collectively, these changes will do two things; add greater complexity to combat and improve replayability. This will also likely make the game a bit harder, albeit while still keeping things predictable and fair. Here are all the major changes that have been confirmed by the game’s creator, Miro Haverinen.

Fear and Hunger 1-style combat mechanics return

The biggest combat change to Fear and Hunger 2: Termina will be the return of more puzzle-like combat.

While the “Dark Souls of” metaphor is brutally overdone, the original Fear and Hunger was definitely the Dark Souls of turn-based RPGs. Almost every enemy can overwhelm a party, unless the player has done enough trial and error to know how to approach them. Fear and Hunger 2: Termina has many threatening enemies, but players will quickly discover that the best approach to most enemies is to just focus attacks on the torso.

The 2.0 update will fix this with “last stand” attacks and item rewards. Certain enemies will have the ability to fire off attacks if specific body parts remain attached. Meanwhile, weapons can be consistently taken from enemies by cutting off the arm they’re holding it with. This brings back that need for experimentation and will likely make the game much more punishing on the first playthrough.

Major overhaul to existing weapons, spells

Fear and Hunger 2: Termina’s 2.0 update will radically overhaul the combat in a few different ways. Central to this is a rebalancing of both enemies and the options available to the player characters. This includes many of the strongest weapons and abilities being nerfed.

Alongside this, all weapons are categorized as either Fixe or Varie. The former offers consistent damage, while the latter offers a larger spread for more randomized results.

At least one new weapon is confirmed to be coming, with Fear and Hunger 1’s Miasma set to return. Fans of the original game will undoubtedly wind up both excited and nervous about the sword’s return.

New dungeons and effigy locations

The biggest change to Fear and Hunger 2: Termina in the 2.0 update is the addition of three new locations. These include the Lakeside Slums, a bathhouse, and Gull Bros Tivoli, a theme park on the waterfront of the Prehevil Outskirts.

These three locations will serve as possible locations for the effigies used to access endgame content. These effigy locations can be randomized, which effectively guarantees a unique experience with each playthrough.

In the current version of Fear and Hunger 2: Termina, the three effigies are guaranteed to be found in the orphanage, the church, and the molded apartments. Adding three new locations will make for a much less formulaic experience.

Expanded Fear and Hunger universe lore

The lore of Fear and Hunger 2: Termina’s universe will be expanded upon in a significant way. While he stated that the “core story” won’t be changed, there will be more exposition regarding the events that take place.

It’s unclear what, precisely, this will include. Fear and Hunger has an enormous amount of background information. There are many unanswered questions related to the pantheon of old that influence the story and the new gods the player encounters. Enemies like the dopplegangers are unexplained and various characters are teased to have greater significance than what players see during their playthroughs.

The specifics are uncertain, but there’s plenty there to work with. Haverinen stated that the larger lore is “going to get Kingdom Hearts levels of convoluted,” though it’s hard to imagine anything matching the absurd scope of the Kingdom Hearts story.

New character lore

Players can look forward to their favorite characters getting a bit more lore. Haverinen stated on his BlueSky account that characters will receive “background info dumps.” There wasn’t any more info beyond that.

It’s uncertain how much will be revealed or how it will play out. It’s also unclear whether “characters” refers to the player characters or all contestants. August, Pav, and Samarie all have backstories that could use expansion. There are also more minor characters like the Man in Black and the Iki Turso that could be fleshed out further.

Ultimately, players will just have to wait to find out what’s on offer for their favorite characters.

Fear and Hunger 2: Termina update doesn’t add new playable characters

The Fear and Hunger 2: Termina update will not add any new playable characters, but will add new recruitable party members.

Fear and Hunger 2: Termina has eight playable characters and it’s staying that way for now. While Termina contestants like Pav, Henryk, August, and Tanaka would all make sense as playable characters, they will remain as NPCs for the foreseeable future.

That said, Haverinen confirmed that there will be some new recruitable party members. This could be new corpses or enemy types that can become ghouls, or it could be more unwieldy party members like Black Kalev.

Either way, this will give players a bit more freedom when it comes to the tougher areas of the game. Or at least, some extra options for making sacrifices to Gro-goroth.
