Capcom is reportedly hard at work on Resident Evil, with surprisingly close release dates for Resident Evil Zero and Code: Veronica remakes.
The Resident Evil series has been on fire in recent years. Four of its most recent installments have been game of the year contenders, and expectations are high for Resident Evil 9. Capcom seemingly expects a warm reception for the game, as it’s said to be pushing two more Resident Evil games in the following years.
These will be remakes for two more classic titles in the series, albeit some of the quirkier installments in the series. This comes from a notable leaker who scooped Capcom on the announcement of Resident Evil 9.
Next Resident Evil remakes leaked with release dates
Resident Evil Zero and Code: Veronica remakes are reportedly coming in 2027 and 2028, though it’s uncertain which game is coming out in which year.
The report comes from Dusk Golem on Twitter, who has been a regular source of leaks related to the Resident Evil series over the years. He stated this during a lengthy discussion regarding the future of the series with followers that touched upon both these games, Resident Evil 9, and long-term plans for the franchise.
When someone suggested that Resident Evil 1 was next in line to be remade, he denied this in no uncertain terms:
There was little question that Capcom intended to continue making these remakes. 2019’s Resident Evil 2 and 2023’s Resident Evil 4 were both commercially successful and are critically regarded as some of the best Resident Evil games ever. The question for a long while has been which one would be next.
Dusk Golem has been consistent in this reporting and also stated that a Resident Evil Zero remake has been in the works for some time and was previously targeted for a 2025 release with Resident Evil 9 coming out in 2024. They state that this didn’t materialize due to other titles being delayed. They also added that they’re uncertain whether the Resident Evil 0 or Resident Evil – Code: Veronica remake will get released first but that one has a targeted release date in 2027, with the other coming in 2028.
Resident Evil 5 remake reportedly not happening any time soon, but why?
News of Resident Evil – Code: Veronica and Resident Evil Zero getting remakes had some fans wondering why Resident Evil 5 was being skipped over. This is especially true given how the RE4 remake closed on a tease for Resident Evil 5 that included the first look at series antagonist Albert Wesker in remakes. While many interpreted this as a tease that Resident Evil 5 would be making a comeback, this seemingly isn’t the case.
The reason that there’s no Resident Evil 5 remake is that the game simply doesn’t feel that old. It used Resident Evil 4’s over-the-shoulder camera to great effect, and feels relatively modern as a result. By comparison, Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil – Code: Veronica both utilize the series’ original tank controls.
The gameplay leap would certainly be enormous, though both games have some unique wrinkles to iron out. Resident Evil 0’s faux co-op system and Code: Veronica’s multiple playable characters will likely require some extra creativity from Capcom.
Fans holding out for a Resident Evil 5 remake will reportedly be waiting for a long time, as Dusk Golem noted that this likely wouldn’t happen until 2030 at the earliest.
