Amid the prayers and rituals for a Bloodborne port or remaster, a new leak states the 2016 Dark Souls 3 is getting remastered instead.
FromSoftware has seen a major rise in popularity in recent years. Elden Ring and its DLC gave the studio the push it needed to get into the mainstream spotlight, but prior Soulsborne games are all fondly remembered. With time grinding ever forward, however, they’re not all equally accessible to players.
Dark Souls 3 in particular is considered one of FromSoftware’s best works. While the game is generally praised for its world-building and tough boss encounters, Dark Souls 3 doesn’t hold up as well as it could on modern hardware. A new report suggests this may change soon with an upcoming remastered version.
Is Dark Souls 3 getting a remastered version?
A report suggests FromSoftware is working on a remastered version of Dark Souls 3.
This information comes from Nick Baker of the XboxEra podcast, who has scooped various stories ranging from the lineups for State of Play events to upcoming Fortnite skins. According to Baker, a “little birdie” told him that the third and final entry in the Dark Souls series would get a remaster.
Dark Souls 3 was an instant success upon release, selling over 3 million copies worldwide by May 2016 and becoming Bandai Namco’s fastest-selling game. It also eventually cleared over 10 million units sold. However, the game will benefit from the remaster treatment, especially the Xbox version, even if most fans would rather see something related to Bloodborne.
Baker also stated the reason for a Bloodborne remaster is shelved is FromSoftware looking to prioritize multi-platform releases. This tracks with the company’s recent releases. Elden Ring, Armored Core 6, Dark Souls 3, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice were all released on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC at launch. Meanwhile, Bloodborne is a Sony-owned game that remains exclusive to the PlayStation 4.
What will the Dark Souls 3 remaster improve on?
The Dark Souls 3 remaster will reportedly support higher resolutions and a higher framerate than the original.
Dark Souls 3 was released on the Xbox One and PS4 in 2016 at a locked 30 FPS. This changed on PlayStation consoles when an upgrade patch started offering up to 60 FPS. The higher framerate for the PlayStation 4 Pro version was carried forward through the PS5’s backward compatibility.
However, Dark Souls 3’s Xbox One version never got an upgrade patch. Because of this, the game has officially been locked at an upper limit of 900p and 30 FPS. The Xbox Series X/S’s FPS Boost upgrade helps level the playing field by bringing the frame limit up to 60. However, the resolution remains 900p, which can look off on many modern TVs and monitors.
Baker claims the Dark Souls 3 remaster may give the game more than 60 FPS. FromSoftware games are usually locked at 60 FPS, though the biggest upgrade Dark Souls Remastered received was in terms of resolution. The 2018 Dark Souls Remastered bumped the game’s resolution cap to 4K, and it’s likely the Dark Souls 3 remaster may do something similar.
Like Dark Souls Remasted, Dark Souls 3’s remastered version may finally bring the game to the Nintendo Switch. However, FromSoftware and Bandai Namco haven’t given any official confirmation.
