Full ZZZ guide to Sunna: Best teams, build, and should you pull?

sunna zzz

Sunna is one of the weirder supports in Zenless Zone Zero, and it’s not just because of her build.

Rather than filling a general role in a team, Sunna was essentially Zenless Zone Zero’s first true dedicated support for a specific agent. This is a general phenomenon that fans have seen in other HoYoverse games and while there have been times where ZZZ agents have a short list of good teammates, none are quite as restrictive as Sunna.

Still, within those teams and with a good build, Sunna is very powerful. Here’s the full breakdown of how to play her, what her best teams are, and whether she’s worth pulling.

Last updated during patch 2.7.

Is Sunna worth pulling?

Sunna is a very good support character when paired with Ye Shunguang and Nangong Yu. Otherwise, she’s generally decent but falls short of other support characters.

Sunna is the best-in-slot support for Ye Shunguang. Add in Zhao or any given stunner or attack-friendly support and players have an incredibly strong team.

Alternatively, players can combine Sunna and a fellow Angel of Delusion. Sunna and Nangong Yu work well supporting all the field-hungry anomaly agents. While Aria is meant to fill out this team, Alice, Miyabi, and Promeia are all very good replacements. Aria and Suna can also be combined with Vivian or a stunner for a workable ether

However, outside of these teams, Sunna isn’t significantly better than Nicole and is generally worse than Astra Yao on attacker teams. She’s a decent option for many, but those who lack Ye Shunguang and don’t want to commit to pulling multiple Angels of Delusion should look elsewhere.

How to play Sunna in Zenless Zone Zero

Sunna is a fairly straightforward support whose general gameplay flow is to use her EX specials, then get off the field.

Her core passive delivers a hefty attack boost, up to 1,050, which she can bestow upon allies using her quick EX special attack. Tap the EX special button quickly and her floating ghost cat Bubblegum will deal damage and give the entire team her buff.

Alternatively, players can hit EX special twice to make Sunna snap a selfie. When she does this, it activates her unique Ether Veil. This Ether Veil adds a 30% stun damage multiplier for 40 seconds.

In both cases, using these moves gives players a quick assist chance for the next agent on the team. It’s best to use them, as Sunna’s individual damage output is limited.

Best Sunna W-Engines

Sunna has a number of decent W-Engine options, with her signature weapon being only marginally better than free-to-play alternatives. This makes Sunna a great pickup for free-to-play and low-spend players who happen to have her ideal teammates.

Does Sunna need her signature W-Engine, Thoughtbop?

Sunna is very effective without utilizing her signature W-Engine. When it comes to Sunna individually, her only major needs are energy regen and attack, which are regularly available among free-to-play support W-Engines. Thoughtbop is her best-in-slot option and is usable on many other agents, but it’s not significantly better than free-to-play alternatives.

Kaboom the Cannon

Kaboom is Sunna’s best free-to-play W-Engine and it’s not a massive drop-off from Thoughtbop. It also gives allies a decent attack buff that synergizes well with Sunna’s core passive.

Weeping Cradle

Weeping Cradle is the best free-to-play W-Engine when it comes to giving Sunna energy regen, as it gives Sunna energy directly rather than increasing her energy regen percentage. However, Kaboom the Cannon is the better option unless it Weeping Cradle has multiple overclocks.

Unfettered Game Ball

Unfettered Game Ball is very good with certain teams when battling physical-weak enemies. It gives a decent crit rate buff to allies, which works well with her stun damage multiplier buff, alongside energy regen. However, if enemies aren’t weak to physical attacks, use Kaboom the Cannon instead.

Best Drive Disc builds for Sunna in ZZZ

Sunna’s Drive Disc compositions are extremely limited, with four-piece Moonlight Lullaby and two-piece Swing Jazz being her best set by a mile. As stated, Sunna needs attack and energy regeneration, and attack is available across all six Drive Disc slots. Still, for those who can’t get lucky on rolls, there is an alternative.

Here are all the Drive Disc build options for Sunna:

  • Four-piece Moonlight Lullaby, two-piece Swing Jazz
  • Four-piece Moonlight Lullaby, two-piece Astral Voice
  • Four-piece Moonlight Lullaby, two-piece Hormone Punk

Moonlight Lullaby with Swing Jazz gives Sunna a pair of energy regen buffs, which is massively important. Worth noting is that she does have a fairly high attack power breakpoint, which makes Astral Voice and Hormone Punk a decent option for those who have her signature W-Engine or can’t get good substat rolls.

Speaking of, the ideal substat rolls for Sunna vary based on her primary DPS. While ATK% and ATK are the most important by a mile, if she’s on an anomaly team, she’ll want anomaly proficiency and PEN. However, crit stats get priority when she’s on an attack team. Regardless, these are minor differences given how much more important her attack stat is.

Sunna stat breakpoints

Sunna’s lone stat breakpoint is raising her attack to 3,500. This allows her to deliver the maximum buff from her core passive, which tops out at 1,050 for both allied agents. Beyond that, she doesn’t really have to concern herself with anything else.

Best Sunna teams in ZZZ

Sunna can be paired with Nangong Yu to make some of the best anomaly teams in Zenless Zone Zero, and stands as a best-in-slot support option for Ye Shunguang. Here’s a breakdown of some of her best teams.

Angels of Delusion(+1?): Nangong Yu, Sunna, Aria / Miyabi / Alice / Promeia

Sunna needs a faction member to effectively serve as a support for anomaly teams. In most cases. Combine her with Nangong Yu and any on-field anomaly agent for a solid team. Alternatively, Sunna and Aria can be backed by certain off-field anomaly agents like Vivian or an anomaly-friendly  support like Yuzuha.

Ye Shunguang support Sunna: Sunna, Ye Shunguang, Zhao / Astra Yao / Dialyn / Seed / Trigger / Ju Fufu

The strongest team of ZZZ 2.0. Sunna is an ideal support for Ye Shunguang with Zhao being the best-in-slot third. That said, Zhao can also be replaced by various other supports or stunners.

Attacker support Sunna

Sunna is a workable generalist support for many attacker teams, albeit one that is typically worse than Astra Yao and more specialized options. Soldier 0 Anby, Trigger, and Sunna work well as a team. So do Seed, Cissia, and Sunna. Or players can put Sunna and Dialyn together with basically any attack to make a solid team.

Best free-to-play Sunna team: Corin, Pulchra, Sunna

Sunna is primarily meant to work in whale teams with three limited-time characters, but she happens to be the best-in-slot support for Corin. The squad can be rounded out with a stunner. Dialyn is the best, but Pulchra is the best free-to-play option.
