Game of Thrones MMORPG may be coming, here’s what’s known

Game of Thrones Battle of the Bastards

While Game of Thrones infamously wrapped up in 2019 after eight seasons, reports suggest that the IP is set to return with an MMORPG.

Game of Thrones took the world by storm and became a cultural phenomenon. While the latter seasons are controversial amongst many, the series’ cultural impact was unquestionable. Now, it seems Game of Thrones’s prequel House of the Dragons won’t be the only way for fans to get a glimpse into Westeros.

Reports suggest that a Game of Thrones MMORPG is in development. Alongside details about what fans can expect in terms of the character creation and story, the report also gives information on when in the show the game might take place in A Song of Ice and Fire chronology.

Game of Thrones MMORPG revealed

A Game of Thrones MMORPG is reportedly in the works by Nexon, the studio behind Maple Story.

The news came from Redanian Intelligence, a website with a reputation for getting ahead of high-fantasy Hollywood media for IPs including The Witcher series and House of the Dragon. While the upcoming game is said to be currently untitled, players will choose between male and female protagonists, and the one who isn’t chosen will still have a role to play in the game’s online campaign, presumably similar to games like Genshin Impact.

The Game of Thrones MMO RPG will reportedly be similar to The Elder Scrolls Online and will have MMORPG-style questlines where the player treks around, solving problems for other characters.

Will the Game of Thrones MMORPG have actors from the show?

The Game of Thrones game from Nexon is reportedly not currently set to include actors or actresses from the show.

While the game will feature familiar names, those who played the characters may not be returning to voice them, and other voice actors are set to replace them. This stands in harsh contrast to 2014’s Game of Thrones game from Telltale Games, which featured Peter Dinklage, Kit Harrington, Lena Headley, and other major names reprising their roles. The report doesn’t say that the cast won’t return, but that they aren’t involved “as far as [they] know.”

It’s unclear if the show’s cast will lend their faces to the game without voicing them, similar to Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. It’s also possible the characters’ appearances will be reimagined and changed to be more similar to how they’re described in the books.

Although an exact release date was not given for the game, it was stated that it could be released it won’t be released until 2025 or later. This isn’t the first MMORPG based on the popular IP, as a game called Game of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms was revealed in 2012 before being canceled.

Where does the Game of Thrones MMORPG take place in the timeline?

The Game of Thrones MMORPG reportedly takes place in the North following Robb Stark’s death.

It’s unknown what plotlines from this point in the story will be explored and whether other areas of Westeros will be included in the game. MMORPG precedent would suggest that the game will start in one area, with more being added over time. Regardless, Winterfell and the wall are specifically cited as locations that the game will include.

The game will likely follow Jon Snow’s adventures with the Night’s Watch where he initially comes in contact with the White Walkers and Wildlings. The primary antagonist might be Roose or Ramsay Bolton though there are many other conflicts that can be highlighted with Mance Rayder, Stannis Baratheon, and the Ironborn all battling across the region.
