Rockstar Games is seemingly bringing players back to a familiar city in GTA 6, but they’ll be doing it as a new pair of characters.
The full reveal trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 was leaked on Twitter, spoiling Rockstar’s reveal party. Twitter quickly took down the trailer, but not before keen-eyed gamers got a look, saved the video, and started re-posting it. Rockstar uploaded the trailer itself on its official channels soon after.
The 90-second trailer gives a look at the city and main characters of GTA 6. Players get a look at the world through multiple lenses, both at the ground level and through what appears to be a simulated social media ecosystem. While this might seem like a gimmick, it’s an important demonstration of how GTA 6’s world will be distinct from its predecessors.
Who are GTA 6’s main characters?
The main characters of GTA 6 are Lucia and Jason. A couple in a relationship akin to the infamous Bonnie and Clyde has long been rumored for the game. This was confirmed in the trailer with images of them in bed in one scene, and then robbing a store in the next.
Players will have control of both Lucia and Jason during the game. Grand Theft Auto 5 lets players switch between three protagonists during the single-player campaign. The leaked build of GTA 6 from 2022 allowed the use of both characters, though it’s unknown whether players will be able to freely swap between them or if one is assigned one or the other depending on the story.
It is also unknown if there will be any gameplay differences between Jason and Lucia. In GTA 5, each playable character had a signature vehicle and a special ability. That may or may not be the case in GTA 6 as well.
Rockstar Games will likely show off more of the gameplay as time goes on. It will be a long wait for the fans as the game is slated to release sometime in 2025.
Does GTA 6 take place in Vice City?
GTA 6 will take place in or near Vice City, which was referenced in the trailer with a massive “VICE” sign.
Vice City is GTA’s version of Miami and GTA 6’s city is clearly meant to be in Florida. The GTA 6 reveal trailer shows palm trees, alligators being pulled out of pools, fanboats running across wetlands, and various “Florida man” characters.
That said, a large lake is also set to be in the game, which hints that it might not be the coastal Vice City. It’s possible that the GTA 6 city could be based on other Florida cities that are further from the coast like Orlando or Jacksonville, or it could simply be an amalgamation of the whole state. GTA 6 is set to cover a very large area, so it’s possible that Vice City is just one area of several.
The trailer showed multiple settings where players will likely be able to visit. Beaches, swamps, street life, mansions, slums, and everything in between will be on offer. The GTA 6 trailer also showcased car culture, boats, and all the wackiness that fans would expect from one of its iconic cities.
