Helldivers 2 is huge for the future of PlayStation, here’s what it is

helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 is set to hit store shelves soon and fans can start planning their approach to the game, with the release date, platforms, and versions of the game.

Helldivers 2 is a sci-fi player versus enemy third-person shooter title developed by Arrowhead Game Studios. Like its top-down shooter predecessor, players explore unique planets and complete missions to upgrade their equipment. In addition to the change in perspective, the Helldivers sequel is set to steer the series in a more online-focused direction.

The game marks the first chapter in a crush of Sony-made live service titles, with six planned to launch by the end of March 2026. These plans also included the upcoming Horizon MMO game and the scrapped The Last of Us Online. With the Sony-published Helldivers 2 on the horizon, fans have received information regarding the game’s release date and which platforms it’ll be coming to at launch.

Does Helldivers 2 have multiplayer?

Helldivers 2 is a PvE multiplayer game where up to 4 players can join a squad and work together to complete objectives.

Unlike its predecessor which was a top-down, twin-stick shooter, Helldivers 2 is a third-person FPS game with a heavy emphasis on coordination between squad members. The game pits players against an alien scourge invading the planet of Super Earth.

Players step into the shoes of a Helldiver, a team of elite soldiers tasked with spreading “peace, liberty and Managed Democracy using the biggest, baddest, and most explosive tools in the galaxy.”

Helldivers 2 also features friendly fire, so players can damage each other. Like other paid games, PlayStation 5 users will need a PlayStation Plus subscription to play the game online, unlike PC players who will be able to play the title online for free.

Helldivers 2 release date, platforms, and versions

Helldivers 2 is releasing on February 8, 2024, for PlayStation 5 and PC. The game is a PS5 console exclusive and isn’t planned for release on the Xbox Series X/S or Nintendo Switch.

The base game comes at a relatively low price, costing just $39.99 while the Super Citizen Edition will set players back by $59.99. The Super Citizen Edition includes the following items:

  1. DP-53 Savior of the Free armor set
  2. Will of the People cape
  3. MP-98 Knight weapon
  4. Super Citizen status
  5. Stratagem Hero Ship game
  6. Steeled Veterans Premium warbond

Players who pre-order either version of the game will get the TR-7 Ambassador of the Brand, TR-62 Knight, and TR-9 Cavalier of Democracy armor sets. The game is available to pre-order on the PlayStation Store and Steam.

Is Helldivers 2 Steam Deck verified?

Helldivers 2 does not have Steam Deck verification yet, but players will likely be able to easily play it on the handheld PC.

The first Helldivers game is currently rated as “playable” on the Steam Deck. Helldivers 2 is much more graphically demanding than its predecessor, but its minimum specs fall well inside the Steam Deck’s capabilities.

From a technical perspective, Helldivers 2 should be able to get verified status on Steam Deck without issue. The question is whether the game will have other components that prevent it from becoming qualified like an incompatible anti-cheat engine like PUBG: Battlegrounds, or whether it will lack features that move it above “playable” like an in-game keyboard. Either way, fans should expect to be able to play it on the Steam Deck.
