The original God of War trilogy might be coming to modern platforms with a remastered collection for PlayStation 5.
The God of War series spans two distinct sagas in terms of narrative and platforms. The first saga chronicles the younger Kratos’ exploits across six games released on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PSP. The second saga rebooted the series and features an older Kratos navigating single fatherhood on PS4 and PS5.
While the PlayStation 2 and PSP titles have seen re-releases, none of them are available for modern platforms except God of War 3. The current era features many references and callbacks to the previous games. New fans may not be aware of the reference, but they may have a chance of discovering them before long.
Will the original God of War trilogy be remastered?
A report suggests that the original God of War trilogy is set to be remastered, but there’s no official word on this being the case.
“I heard we might be getting the OG God of War trilogy remastered on PlayStation,” said Nick Baker in the latest episode of the XboxEra podcast.
The collection reportedly includes the first three God of War titles, and will not have Chains of Olympus or Ascension. There is no official way to play these games on current-gen platforms, save God of War 3 which was remastered and released individually on PlayStation 4. The only option for playing some of the others is via cloud streaming on PlayStation Plus’s premium plans, which are available on PS4, PS5, and PC via the PlayStation Plus app. Leaked documents suggest that the service will expand to smartphones and TVs in the future and make the entries accessible to more players.
The God of War Ragnarok Valhalla DLC released by Santa Monica Studios hints at a return to the series’ roots. The DLC shows Kratos confronting his past self in a literal sense. Many fans took this as a hint that the series would someday return to its roots. Neither PlayStation nor any of its development studios has announced a re-release of any God of War games.
When is the remaster of the original God of War trilogy coming out?
A remaster of the God of War trilogy could be coming in 2024 or 2025. Baker gave that estimate after initially discussing the games.
“Now, I’m not 100 percent sure if it will be announced in 2024 and released in 2024 or released in 2025… that part I’m not clear on, but what I have heard is OG God of War Trilogy remaster.” Baker stated.
The PlayStation 5 has a crowded release schedule in early 2024 including Rise of the Ronin in March and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in February. Additionally, The Last of Us 2 Part 2 remaster is set for release in January. That likely means that fans will likely have to wait for a little while before playing the game on modern consoles regardless.
