Here’s why Star Wars Outlaws isn’t on Steam and when it will be

Star Wars Outlaws is out, but fans wonder if the game will ever come to Steam or if it’ll forever be locked out of Valve’s storefront.

Star Wars Outlaws is one of the biggest releases of 2024, which is to be expected from an open-world Star Wars game. Unlike EA’s Star Wars Jedi games, players fill the shoes of Kay Vess, a sneaky scoundrel who completes heists to survive and make a name for herself in Star Wars’ criminal underworld.

While many long-time Star Wars fans can’t wait to get their hands on the game to see which of their favorite characters pop in the game, some may have to wait longer than others. Here’s whether Star Wars Outlaws will ever come to Steam and how long fans might have to wait.

Is Star Wars Outlaws on Steam?

Star Wars Outlaws isn’t available on Steam, as is a trend with recent Ubisoft titles.

Like other Ubisoft releases, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Star Wars Outlaws isn’t available on Valve’s storefront at launch. Since the game isn’t available on Steam, it isn’t playable natively on the Steam Deck, even if players can use workarounds.

While it would arguably make business sense for Ubisoft to keep its biggest games exclusive to its own digital storefront, that’s not actually the case. Though the game isn’t available on Steam, it’s available on the Epic Games Store.

Why isn’t Star Wars Outlaws on Steam?

Star Wars Outlaws isn’t on Steam because the game is exclusive to Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Connect.

For the past few years, Ubisoft has launched its original titles on its digital storefront, Ubisoft Connect. Ubisoft is probably making this an exclusive to promote the store and to drive users to the Ubisoft+ subscription service. This way, Ubisoft can earn more money since Steam won’t take a 30% cut from each copy.

Staying on the topic of the 30% cut, the Epic Games Store can offer developers a larger share of revenue from sales than Steam does. Additionally, Steam is more lenient when it comes to its review and refund policies. This could be a major reason Ubisoft doesn’t release games on Steam at launch. For example, many fans might have refunded the game during the Star Wars Outlaws launch when they had to delete their pre-launch saved data.

Will Star Wars Outlaws ever come out on Steam?

Star Wars Outlaws will likely come out on Steam in 2025 or 2026.

Like previous Ubisoft titles, the game will likely come to Steam after about a year or two of its launch. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was an Epic Games Store exclusive for two years, after which it was available on Steam. If Ubisoft follows in that game’s footsteps, then players can expect to wait for a bit before being able to buy it through Steam.

However, some games can lose their exclusivity earlier. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and Skull and Bones both made their way to Steam less than a year after their release. The game’s Steam launch might depend on the game’s initial sales figures, prompting Ubisoft to release it on Valve’s storefront.
