The Terarium of Blueberry Academy in the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet The Indigo Disk DLC has reintroduced many Pokemon that were once exclusive to previous generations of the franchise, including Hisuian Qwilfish, which can be caught and evolved into Overqwil.
Hisuian Qwilfish and Overqwil are now catchable in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Though they have been available in the game since Pokemon Bank compatibility was added, the only way to get them has been through transfer and breeding. Overqwil introduced in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, and The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero Part 2: The Indigo Disk DLC brings it to the mainline Pokemon series.
Overqwil is a relatively powerful Pokemon with dark-poison typing, making it worth catching. It’s not immediately obvious how to evolve Hisuian Qwilfish into Overqwil however, and the method for doing so in Scarlet and Violet is different from the one seen in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Here’s how to get both Pokemon.
Where to catch Hisuian Qwilfish in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: The Indigo Disk DLC
Hisuian Qwilfish is exclusively found in the waters of the Polar Biome close to the Central Plaza of the Terarium.
The Terarium is a new location that can only be reached in The Indigo Disk DLC. As such, purchasing the DLC is the only way to catch a Hisuian Qwilfish and subsequently evolve it into Overqwil. Of course, the usual methods to obtain them for free still work even without the DLC including Pokemon HOME transfer, trading, and Tera Raid battle invitation.
Locating a Hisuian Qwilfish is relatively easy. Begin at the Central Plaza and simply head out the door that leads to the Polar Biome. Immediately bear left into the nearest lake and proceed clockwise through the waters while looking out for a Hisuian Qwilfish. If it doesn’t spawn there, continue clockwise over the short land bridge and into the next lake where Qwilfish may also spawn.
Additionally, the Pokemon can also be found in the larger bodies of water to the northern end of the Polar Biome. As with the area close to the Central Plaza, the Pokemon is small but a common spawn.
Being quite tiny, players will have to keep a sharp eye out to spot them. They’re a relatively common spawn, however, so it shouldn’t be particularly difficult to find one.
How to evolve Hisuian Qwilfish into Overqwil in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet The Indigo Disk DLC
Hisuian Qwilfish evolves into Overqwil by leveling up while knowing the move Barb Barrage.
Evolving a Hisuian Qwilfish into Overqwil is even easier and quicker than finding it in the wild, unlike the rather complex evolution for Basculegion. The Barb Barrage move needs to be learned and it unlocks at level 28.
Hisuian Qwilfish is always caught at a higher level than this. Next, ensure that the Barb Barrage move is known. Depending on the Pokemon, this may require players to use the Move Reminder function in the Pokemon’s summary page. Once that is set up, all that needs to be done is a single level-up. This can be done by battle or by using candies.
Can a regular Johtonian Qwilfish be evolved into Overqwil?
Regular Johtonian Qwilfish cannot be evolved in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
Johntonian Qwilfish and Hisuian Qwilfish share the same base stats but unlike the latter, it has never been able to evolve into another Pokemon. This remains the case in The Indigo Disk DLC where it cannot be evolved into Overqwil.
While it’s possible things may change in a future Pokemon game, there is no way to evolve a Johtonian Qwilfish and no way to transform it into a Hisuian Qwilfish. This unfortunately means that anyone who happens to catch a shiny regular Qwilfish will likely have to stick it in a box forever rather than bringing it to battle.
