Fans got a surprise bit of news regarding Assassin’s Creed Shadows, with Ubisoft announcing the game’s release date being delayed
Ubisoft first announced Assassin’s Creed Shadows in 2022. Since then, the company has been fielding concerns, ranging from complaints about characters to accusations of plagiarism. Many have been excited to play the game despite the controversies. However, there were sudden concerns that players may be waiting longer than they expected. Those concerns were realized in short order.
Ahead of a hands-on preview event at the Tokyo Game Show, Ubisoft made the sudden announcement that it would delay the game. Here’s when it comes out now, and what caused the change.
Is Assassin’s Creed Shadows delayed?
Ubisoft delayed Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ release date from November 15, 2024 release date to February 14, 2025.
Only two days before the highly anticipated Tokyo Game Show, Ubisoft posted on X that had canceled a planned exhibition due to “various circumstances.” While Assassin’s Creed Shadows was set to be the big name game featured, other titles such as the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake won’t see content revealed through the TGS stream either.
Shortly after, sources close to Ubisoft began sharing that the company had canceled hands-on press previews for the game.
It was unclear what these “various circumstances” included but Ubisoft revealed what happened on Twitter the following day.
“We realize we need the time to polish and refine the experience, pushing further some of our key features. As such, we’ve made the decision to postpone the release date to February 14, 2025.
Video game journalist Stephen Totilo added on Twitter that Ubisoft told him that the response to Star Wars Outlaws was part of the reason for the delay. Star Wars Outlaws fell short of expectations both internally and among fans. Ubisoft may be trying to ensure the new game runs perfectly.
This would be the second game in the series to be delayed, following Assassin’s Creed Mirage.
Is Assassin’s Creed Shadows canceled?
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is not canceled. The game’s release has simply been pushed back roughly three months, which Ubisoft says is to give the developers more time.
Despite the delay, there’s effectively no chance of the game being scrapped entirely. Demos show that the game is in an advanced state of development. Repeated gaffes by Ubisoft have defined the marketing for the title, but it still looked ready to go gold as far back as August.
Companies have shipped games in worse states than what fans have already seen of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Ubisoft‘s decision to delay the game, if anything, should instill extra confidence in the final product.
