Is FromSoftware’s next game a Soulsborne? The answer is leaked

FromSoftware is working on its next big project and it doesn’t seem like it will be a Soulsborne game, or anything in the realm of dark fantasy.

Fans consider Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC the cherry on top of FromSoftware’s magnum opus. With tens of millions of copies sold, many wonder where FromSoftware can funnel their talents to next. Some wish for another Soulsborne from the studio in yet another setting, much like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

That’s almost certainly not going to be the case, though. A job listing posted by FromSoftware didn’t reveal much about the company’s next project, but it did reveal what it won’t be.

What is FromSoftware’s next game after Elden Ring DLC?

FromSoftware’s next game release after Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree might be a mech game. It’s unclear what kind of project this is, whether it’s Armored Core 6 DLC, a new Gundam video game, or a completely new IP.

Regardless, unless FromSoftware is doing something in the vein of Doom: The Dark Ages, it’s not going to be a Soulsborne game.

Hidetaka Miyazaki believes multiple projects from younger talents are the next step for FromSoftware. Despite likely raking in significant profits from Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, the company boss seems to be just as intrigued by FromSoftware’s future as its fans. Miyazaki, in no uncertain terms, believes the well is truly dry for Elden Ring, at least in video game form.

“Where FromSoftware is right now, in terms of scale, I would say Elden Ring is really the limit. We’ve tapped every resource and talent that we have access to, scaling it even bigger, I’d have my concerns,” shared Miyazaki about Elden Ring’s future.

With Shadow of the Erdtree being bigger than many standalone video games, it’s difficult to argue otherwise. As for the game’s lore, Miyazaki is more optimistic. He’s excited about Elden Ring’s potential adaptations into other mediums. Given George RR Martin’s teases of an Elden Ring adaptation, that may come very soon.

More Armored Core could come, but will FromSoftware revive other past franchises?

With FromSoftware looking to scale as a business and expand as a publisher, it could start creating more new IPs.

Miyazaki cited Armored Core 6 as part of the “turning point” for FromSoftware, moving its focus from Soulsborne games to more varied genres. Armored Core 6 may not have sold like Elden Ring, but it still did well for a long-abandoned franchise. The FromSoftware name likely helped those sales along, especially for fans new to the series.

FromSoftware does have a deep library of games to pull from. Miyazaki stated in several interviews the studio has “multiple projects” in the works. That’s interesting because, before Dark Souls, that’s essentially how the company operated.

The 2000s saw the company develop games from all sorts of genres. Horror fans may hope for a return to the highly obscure Echo Night series. Others may want the lighter platformer fare of The Adventures of Cookie & Cream. Fans desperate for something more akin to Dark Souls or Sekiro should cross their fingers for a Tenchu or Otogi revival. Regardless of what the company does next, the gaming world will watch with excited eyes.
