Will Fortnite servers shut down in 2024? Here’s what’s happening

The gaming industry has been unpredictable to the point where nothing feels save, leaving Fortnite players wondering if servers might shut down in 2024 or any point in the foreseeable future.

While it might sound ridiculous given the sheer popularity of Fortnite, the fear isn’t baseless. Epic laid off over 800 employees in 2023 and continued concerns over the game not reaching financial goals. Alongside this, the company acknowledged that the Epic Games Store was still a money-losing endeavor. This, alongside the never-ending churn of layoffs from 2022 into 2024, has left gamers concerned about basically everything in the industry.

So is Fortnite safe? And what could the future hold for the game?

Are Fortnite servers shutting down in 2024?

Fortnite servers are not shutting down in 2024.

There are currently no plans to shut down Fortnite servers, nor are there any reports or leaks suggesting that the game won’t stick around. In fact, Epic has had a lot in store for Fortnite players including everything from in-game concerts to crossover events with other popular games

LEGO Fortnite has been a massive hit with fans and has been considered a success by Epic and its employees. The latest standalone game mode, Reload, also proved the popularity of Fortnite. It was so popular that the battle royale mode struggled in June 2024 as players flocked to Reload instead.

Nothing is certain in life, including the future of Fortnite servers, but it’s safe to say Epic Games won’t shut down its most popular game at any point in the next few years, barring some sort of actual catastrophe. In fact, signs point to Fortnite being on a bit of an upswing, albeit not he ideal one for Epic.

When announcing the layoffs at Epic Games, CEO Tim Sweeney said that Fortnite is “starting to grow again,” albeit in a way that’s less profitable for the company. The popular content is less profitable but is bringing more eyes and players to the game than it would have otherwise.

“Success with the creator ecosystem is a great achievement, but it means a major structural change to our economics,” Sweeney said.

Others question Fortnite’s staying power as more content creators and casuals alike voice frustration with rising costs of V-Bucks. V-Bucks prices have jumped up and down over the last few years, but jumped toward the end of 2023.

Will Fortnite shut down in 2025?

There’s no sign that Fortnite will shut down in 2025, or any point in the near future.

Fortnite is nowhere close to dying and still hits player counts that few other games could even touch. Epic Games doesn’t publicly release those numbers, but when it highlights the game’s high points, they comfortably eclipse anything ever seen on Steam.

Even if Epic begins divesting resources from Fortnite, that wouldn’t mean the game’s death. Other multiplayer titles that didn’t hit the peaks of Fortnite have stuck around for decades.
