Fans got their first real look at the upcoming Knuckles spinoff series and it answered questions about its place in the Sonic movie timeline, canon status, and release date.
Paramount Pictures’ live-action Sonic movie franchise started in 2020 and it seemingly boosted the already-iconic Sonic franchise. With several games and the heavily anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie set to be released in the latter half of 2024, fans won’t have to wait too long for their Sonic universe fix, as the Knuckles Paramount Plus spinoff series is on the horizon.
The upcoming series got an official trailer, and it gave fans information on what the premise will be and how it fits into the overall Sonic movie universe. The trailer also revealed a surprise character appearance, raising the question of what other beloved characters from the Sonic franchise might show up in the future.
Is the Knuckles show canon to the Sonic the Hedgehog movies?
The upcoming Knuckles will canonically take place between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movies.
The trailer for the six-episode series shows Knuckles, Tails, and Sonic, played by Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and Idris Elba respectively, taking it easy in Green Hills, Montana after the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Knuckles, being the vengeance-hungry warrior he is, sets out into the world alongside local cop Wade Whipple, played by Adam Pally, in search of fellow malcontents. The unlikely duo soon realizes that some former Robotnik employees are interested in weaponizing the echidna’s powers, giving them a target for their frustrations.
With flashy action sets and surprise character appearances, one of which was revealed in the show’s trailer as Chief and warlord of the Knuckles Clan Pachacamac, the Knuckles series is likely to set up the third Sonic movie, where a fan-favorite actor might be playing a certain shadowy hedgehog.
Paramount+ Knuckles series release date
The Knuckles show will stream on April 26, exclusively on Paramount+ in the USA and Canada. Other territories with Paramount Plus will get to watch the show on April 26, while Japan will get the show “later in the year.”
Knuckles will be a six-episode spinoff series, and all six episodes will premier on the same day, ensuring fans don’t have to wait for every episode. It’s currently unsure if the show will stream on any other streaming service.
