Nier: Automata’s lead creatives have reunited, is it for Nier 3?

Nier 3, or some manner of new Nier game, may be in the works judging from a recent interview.

A decade ago, fans wouldn’t have even dreamed the Nier franchise would have a highly anticipated sequel, but the release of 2017’s Nier: Automata saw the series explode in popularity.  Nier went from a spin-off of the obscure Drakengard series into a bonafide franchise. The game’s success led to an enhanced port of the first game, Nier: Replicant, for the series’ 10th anniversary.

Since then, news has been scarce on a true follow-up to Nier: Automata, but that may change very soon. The key figures surrounding that breakout hit are working together once again on a new project, sparking conversation about a threequel.

Is Nier 3 confirmed?

Multiple key figures from Nier: Automata’s development are working together on a new project, which has been speculated to be Nier 3. The game has not been officially confirmed, however.

Weekly Famitsu Magazine published an interview with Nier series producer Yosuke Saito, who revealed that he is working with Yoko Taro and Keiichi Okabe on a new project. Taro is Nier’s series director, and Okabe is the series’ composer. While it’s unknown if the project is related to Nier, the combination of  Taro, Saito, and Okabe raises an eyebrow.

“It might be Nier, it might not be Nier. That’s all I can say for now,” Saito said.

He also teased a separate project in the works unrelated to the Nier series in the same interview.

Nier 3’s had quite a few supposed teases in the past year. During a Nier: Automata concert in 2023, Taro hyped up the crowd and asked if they wanted a sequel. The crowd responded positively to the idea. Additionally, many of the show’s visuals replaced the letter “E” with the number 3, a potential tease for a follow-up.

Taro’s no stranger to unorthodox storytelling, so teasing a potential sequel in an exclusive concert isn’t out of his wheelhouse. If nothing else, Taro likely wanted to build some buzz for Nier 3 and get publishers interested in the project, if he does plan on making it one day.

A new Nier game also makes sense given Square Enix’s ongoing overhaul. The company announced the cancelation of numerous projects and a new multi-platform approach surrounding its reports for the fiscal year ending 2024. This included the announcement that the company will focus on its most successful IPs, which Nier stands among.

Either way, Taro and crew will likely reveal more details about these unannounced projects in 2024.
