The Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC is set to introduce a new Pokemon type to the game.
The type chart has undergone several changes over the last 25 years, but it has only added new types twice. The first additions came with Pokemon Gold and Silver in 1999 with steel and dark typing, while 2013’s Pokemon X and Y added the fairy type. Though the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC won’t make an addition as significant as those, the DLC is set to shake typing up in another way.
While the ninth Pokemon generation was already unique in offering players the opportunity to dynamically change their Pokemon’s typing, things are going a step further. A special new typing exclusive to Terastalization is coming.
What is the new Pokemon type in the Scarlet and Violet DLC?
The new Pokemon type has not yet been named and it is unknown what weaknesses it might have.
One of the few things that is known is that this new type is seemingly set to be exclusive to Terastalization, rather than a type that Pokemon naturally have. Official materials refer to it as a “19th Tera Type.” Its symbol is a series of pentagons encircling a hexagon. Odds are that it has some relation to Terapagos, the new legendary Pokemon that is set to be introduced in part two of the Scarlet and Violet DLC.
It’s unknown how this new Tera Type will relate to other Pokemon typings. The rainbow pattern surrounding its icon suggests it will have some sort of universal relationship to other types. It could be completely neutral with no strengths or weaknesses, or it could have a unique mechanic with the move Tera Blast.
One notable thing is that the move was revealed with a gameplay clip showing a battle between a Baxcalibur and Dragonite. Baxcalibur has access to this new Pokemon type, as well as the move Tera Blast. Tera Blast is shown as having a neutral relationship against Dragonite.
This suggests the new type won’t be universally strong against other types, and isn’t based on the user’s existing typing. Baxcalibur is a dragon-ice type, both of which hit Dragonite for super-effective damage.
Is the new Pokemon type in the Teal Mask or Indigo Disk part of the DLC?
All signs point to the new Pokemon type being introduced in the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC Part 2- The Indigo Disk. While there was no official acknowledgment of this, what has been shown points to it coming in the second half of the DLC.
The symbol for the new Tera Type is similar to Terapagos. Alongside this, all the screenshots showing it are at Blueberry Academy. Blueberry Academy is a new area that will be central to part two of the DLC. It’s hypothetically possible that it could be introduced in The Teal Mask and then play a greater role in The Indigo Disk, but that’s less likely.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero will see Part 1: The Teal Mask released on September 13. The Indigo Disk does not yet have a release date.
