Lucasfilms purchased a number of new domains and likely spoiled the name of the upcoming Indiana Jones video game that will be published by Bethesda Softworks.
Lucasfilm Games and Bethesda announced in 2021 that MachineGames, the studio behind the modern Wolfenstein and remastered Quake games, was developing an Indiana Jones game. While Todd Howard stated in 2023 that the game was “midway” through development, suggesting that fans won’t fill Indy’s shoes anytime soon, fans might know what name the upcoming game will go by.
The information on the upcoming Indiana Jones game was flagged on Twitter. While details on the game are still scarce, this likely spoils the official announcement of the game’s name.
What is Bethesda’s Indiana Jones game called?
Bethesda’s Indiana Jones game will be titled “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle,” judging from recent domain registrations and trademark filings.
There have been a lot of flags planted around that name by Lucasfilms. Among the registrations is “http://indianajonesandthegreatcirclegame.com” which strongly suggests that this is the name of the Indiana Jones game, not for an unannounced movie or another project. Lucasfilm also filed for a trademark in Europe in 2022 for “THE GREAT CIRCLE” with goods and services for video games.
Although there’s no confirmed release window for the Indiana Jones game, Microsoft has hinted that the January 18 Developer Direct will reveal more information on “The Great Circle.” How much will come out during that event is unclear, but there’s a lot of ground to cover given how nothing has been revealed about the game since its initial teaser trailer.
Neither Bethesda nor Lucasfilm have shown any gameplay or given any details about the Indiana Jones game. Although it’ll likely be a first-person game based on previous titles developed by MachineGames, executive producer Todd Howard has stated that the game aims to deliver a “mash-up” of different genres. This statement suggests that Indiana Jones might let players switch between first and third-person modes like other Bethesda games while blending different gameplay mechanics.
While the gameplay is a major question, so is the game’s lineup of platforms. Since Microsoft acquired Zenimax Media in 2021, Bethesda and MachineGames fall under the Xbox umbrella, making Indiana Jones a first-party game, much like the upcoming Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2. Because of that, it’s possible the game may be exclusive to PC and Xbox consoles. Fans will ideally find out before long.
