2024’s feast for RPG fans is going to continue into the holiday season, with Atlus officially revealing the release date for the upcoming Metaphor: ReFantazio.
Atlus is on a hot streak lately. Persona 3 Reload has been a critical and commercial hit and its DLC is set to add a sizable chunk of content. Unicorn Overlord has flown under the radar, but the tactical RPG has emerged as a legitimate candidate for winning Game of the Year honors. Alongside this, the studio is reportedly working on numerous crowd-pleasing projects including remakes and remasters of classic Persona games.
The biggest thing on its plate right now is the launch of a new IP with Metaphor: ReFantazio. The game draws inspiration from recent Persona games in both its gameplay and presentation, something that could make it one of the biggest games of 2024. Atlus has kept details close to its vest regarding the game, but a showcase of the game revealed its release date and gameplay.
Metaphor: ReFantazio release date revealed
Metaphor: ReFantazio is scheduled to launch on October 11, 2024.
During the Atlus Exclusive Showcase, game director Katsura Hashino did a deep dive into its gameplay, story, and actual launch. This included confirming the game will be released in October.
The release of Metaphor: ReFantazio is set to continue what has already been a stacked year for RPG fans. Alongside Atlus’ own Persona 3 Reload, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth arrived in February and was followed by Dragon’s Dogma 2. Both games have enjoyed strong responses from fans. The calendar has been stacked enough that major releases such as Unicorn Overlord and Granblue Fantasy: Relink have wound up going overlooked by the general gaming audience despite being successes in their own rights.
Things aren’t slowing down, either. Alongside new releases like AFK Journey and Wuthering Waves are re-releases like Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance and DLC like Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. While gamers were drowning in the sheer number of AAA titles that were released in 2023, RPG fans in particular are set to have an embarrassment of riches in 2024.
Metaphor’s Persona inspirations detailed
Metaphor: ReFantazio is set to borrow a lot from the Persona series in terms of its gameplay and aesthetics.
Hashino discussed the title during the showcase and acknowledged some of the similarities to the Persona series. Included in that was confirmation that Persona 3, 4, and 5 composer Shoji Meguro is handling the music for Metaphor: ReFantazio. Stylish menus and a social link-style progression system for party members are also on offer.
Metaphor: ReFantazio looks like it will scratch the itch for fans struggling to deal with Persona 6’s release date likely being far in the future. Fans thankfully won’t have to wait too long for Metaphor.
