WB gives update on Quidditch Champions, Hogwarts Legacy DLC

Quidditch Champions character

There’s a lot of magic left in the Wizarding World, particularly from the upcoming Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions game and the possibility of Hogwarts Legacy DLC.

Hogwarts Legacy was among the highest-selling video games of last year and is almost certainly going to see a sequel. In December 2023, the game crossed 22 million units sold and is in a two-horse race with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for being the highest-selling game of 2023. Zelda was sitting on 19.5 million units sold in November, and may or may not have surpassed Hogwarts Legacy during the holidays.

Regardless, there’s no denying the game’s massive commercial success. It’s no surprise that Warner Bros wants to capitalize on the Harry Potter hype generated by Hogwarts Legacy. That could yield some of the long-awaited Hogwarts Legacy DLC.

Will there be a Quidditch game?

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, a title based on the Wizarding World’s top fictional sport, is currently in development.

One of the most notable absences from Hogwarts Legacy was Quidditch. Given how Quidditch is essentially the magical version of the NFL, and the rules established in the books don’t make sense, it’s possible that the developers simply didn’t feel comfortable including it in Hogwarts Legacy.

That doesn’t mean it’s not coming, though. Quidditch Champions will be a standalone title, separate from Hogwarts Legacy. The genre of fantasy sports games doesn’t have a lot of competition, especially with Blood Bowl 3 released last year to middling reviews. There are also fans who still fondly remember the standalone Quidditch game that released in 2003, Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup. Quidditch Champions could occupy a niche that hasn’t been filled in some time.

Will there be Hogwarts Legacy DLC?

There is no official confirmation of Hogwarts Legacy DLC. The game’s publisher previously stated that it wasn’t going to receive DLC but the company has since pivoted to heavily emphasizing content after games’ initial release.

However, in a statement to Variety, Warner Bros Interactive president David Haddad stated there was “a series of other things” in the works that would allow fans to engage more with the Wizarding World. Although vague as far as teasers go, it’s confirmation that Warner Bros isn’t done with Hogwarts Legacy just yet.

According to Haddad, the plan for the company is “the accumulation of keeping live games launched with new content…and large launching new content.” WB Games has been heavily emphasizing live-service elements across all its games despite pushback from fans, and that approach could mean that the company changes its plans for Hogwarts Legacy despite initially indicating that it wouldn’t receive DLC.

The success of Warner Bros Games is good news for the division, especially since other media branches of the conglomerate are suffering. Video games will likely be a focus for the company in 2024, given the success of titles like Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1. That said, there is no release date for the Quidditch Champions or Hogwarts Legacy DLC at the moment. Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League will have to carry Warner Bros Games for a while when it comes out in February 2024.
