A Gears of War voice actor teased that details regarding the series are coming soon, which has reignited excitement surrounding Gears 6.
The Gears of War franchise has been dormant since the release of the spin-off title Gears Tactics in 2020. As for mainline games, the last title to launch was Gears 5, which launched in 2019. However, the franchise might return soon, as one of the actors hinted at a new announcement right around the corner.
This new information gives Gears of War fans a hint for when they can see the beloved first-party Xbox IP return. Microsoft’s new approach to handling first-party games also raises the question of whether the next game in the series will be an Xbox exclusive.
When will Gears of War 6 be announced?
A Gears of War voice actor teased that big news, potentially Gears 6, will be revealed in June 2024.
The voice of Gears of War character JD, Liam McIntyre, dropped the hint on Twitter. When asked about the fate of the character he portrayed in Gears 4 and 5, McIntyre stated that while he didn’t know what happened to the protagonist of Gears 4, fans will find out in June. This new reveal aligns with an earlier leak that stated Xbox might announce Gears 6 in Summer 2024.
McIntyre specifically mentioned June, which suggests the announcement might happen during the Xbox Showcase confirmed to be taking place in June. The Summer Game Fest on June 7, 2024, might also give fans more insights on the next game in the Gears series.
The voice actor followed up a couple of hours later by saying that he really has no idea and is just hopeful that fans get more information on the next Gears game in June. With probable NDA restrictions, McIntyre likely couldn’t give information even if he has any.
Will Gears of War 6 be an Xbox exclusive?
Gears of War 6 might not be an Xbox exclusive, but it will almost certainly be on Game Pass on day one.
Microsoft’s newfound focus on multi-platform releases suggests that the next Gears game might come to rival platforms. Since exclusives like Sea of Thieves became multi-platform, it’s safe to assume that Gears 6 could do the same. Microsoft has kept its most iconic franchises such as Halo and Forza Motorsport as actual Xbox exclusives, but it’s unclear whether that will remain the case for any length of time.
There currently isn’t any confirmation that the next game in the Gears series will be Gears 6, nor any official word that anything related to the series is coming in June.
However, there are reports that it’s in development and that The Coalition has shelved other projects to prioritize its development. There are also speculations that Gears 6 will be the first open-world game in the series.
