What is Kross Origins, the new IP coming from 2K Games?

take two new ip

Take-Two Interactive, the company behind games such as Grand Theft Auto, Bioshock, Borderlands, and XCOM, has registered domains for a new IP entitled Kross Origins that will be published by 2K Games.

2K has been relatively lowkey with its releases in recent years. The publisher continues to pump out releases for its sports franchises including PGA, WWE 2K, and NBA 2K, as well as the likes of Marvel’s Midnight Suns and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. Although far from being on the back foot, 2K hasn’t had a major AAA hit in quite a while.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns was noted by Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick to be a commercial flop. Other major franchises such as Bioshock and Borderlands haven’t had major entries in at least five years. Following data miners stating GTA publisher Rockstar Games is working on a new medieval fantasy game, a leak shows that a new IP is coming from 2K Games.

What is Kross Origins about?

There is no official information on what Kross Origins is about.

On December 20, 2023, 2K Games parent company Take-Two Interactive registered several domains related to something named Kross Origins. Notably, one of these registered websites is “krossorigins2k.com,” suggesting the game will be published under the 2K umbrella.

There’s no telling what it could be about, but there are potential candidates. 31st Union, formerly known as 2K Silicon Valley, has been working on a brand-new IP since February 2020.  Not much is known about it other than the fact that it’s a “multiplayer character-action game.” 31st Union is notably composed of former Call of Duty and Dead Space developers.

There was also an arcade-style NFL game that was set to come out in 2022, but was delayed. One of the domains for Kross Origins had “Japan” in its name, and it’s possible the game could receive a true arcade release in the country.

Lastly, there’s an untitled mafia game being developed by Hangar 13. This seems less likely, as it’s hard to imagine how a game about the mafia would end up being entitled “Kross Origins.”

Is Take-Two Interactive losing money?

Take-Two Interactive reported significant losses in Q4 2023. This was attributed to ongoing copyrights, patents, trademarks, and the development costs of unreleased or canceled games.

The games industry as a whole experienced a rough 2023. Mass layoffs, company closures, and controversy were commonplace in this rollercoaster of a year. Zelnick believes 2024 will be the start of better things for the company, with 36 titles nearing release. Whether Kross Origins is part of those 36 titles remains to be seen.
