Overwatch 2 Game Director Aaron Keller is going to be talking about the possibility of 6v6 returning, but should fans get their hopes up?
A Director’s Take on June 28 discussed the current state of tanks, something that has been frustrating players a lot. It largely explained that tanks need to feel “tankier” to help with the current meta, but players were left frustrated because the Director’s Take didn’t discuss what gamers truly wanted to hear; is 6v6 coming back?
This has been a much-discussed topic in Overwatch 2’s fandom ever since 5v5 was implemented. While Overwatch 1 had 6v6 gameplay throughout its entire existence, it was later changed to 5v5 due to balance and matchmaking issues. Tanks were the strongest role in Overwatch throughout much of the game’s history, and numerous attempts to change this didn’t work.
Despite this, a vocal portion of the Overwatch 2 player base has called for a return to 6v6 gameplay and competitors like Marvel Rivals are taking this approach. A response from Keller, intentionally or unintentionally, drummed up hope that this would happen. But is there actually reason to believe?
Is 6v6 coming back to Overwatch 2?
Blizzard has not indicated that 6v6 will come back to Overwatch 2 as a standard style of gameplay.
Fans got excited over the idea after a post from Aaron Keller on X.
“My last post spurred a lot of talk around 6v6. We recognize that this is an important topic for many people…and would like to jump into the conversation to share our [point of view],” Keller said in June.
Though fans took Keller’s tweets as an indication that 6v6 will come back in Overwatch 2, there’s no sign of this happening. The actual angle of the Director’s Take focused on 6v6 is unknown. The most likely direction will be discussing the reason developers chose to turn to 5v5 and why they’ll keep it as the norm.
It’s always possible Keller and his team are contemplating how to bring two tanks back to Overwatch 2. It’s also possible that game modes with more than 10 players in the server could become a more regular occurrence. There’s also some potential discussion regarding how new heroes like Venture and reworked older heroes could fit into 6v6. For now, Overwatch 2 players will have to wait to see what Keller has to say.
