Will Concord have paid battle passes or DLC? We now know

The Concord X account answered some big questions fans had about the game, including whether the game will have paid battle passes and post-launch content.

Concord was made out to be PlayStation’s take on the hero shooter genre and some believed it would give games like Valorant and Overwatch 2 a run for their money. While the game’s reception leading up to its release has been less than ideal, even when stacked against games that don’t officially exist, it hasn’t been all bad.

The official Concord X account thanked fans for participating in the beta. Replies on the post answered some of the biggest lingering questions regarding the game, including whether Concord will have paid battle passes and how the post-launch content will work.

Concord won’t have paid battle passes

The Concord X account revealed Concord will not have a battle pass, as character Variants can be unlocked through progression and weekly missions.

Battle passes have become extremely common in live-service games, so it’s surprising that Concord won’t have one. Firewatch Studios, the studio behind Concord, states that the plan is to make Concord “a rewarding and robust experience from day one.” The social media post claims that simply progressing through the game by leveling up characters and completing jobs is enough to yield “meaningful rewards.”

Without a battle pass, the primary method to unlock skins for characters is through progression and special weekly missions called Variant Unlock Jobs. Players can pick up these unique missions from the Job Board at launch.

Online shooters not having a battle pass isn’t completely unheard of. While Overwatch 2 has been heavily criticized by players, the original Overwatch lacked a battle pass and kept fans around with seasonal events.

Will Concord have paid DLC or updates?

Concord is set to have free content updates, but will not have paid DLC.

The Concord team detailed its plan for the game’s post-launch content in the same X post talking about Concord’s lack of paid battle passes. New playable characters, maps, and modes will come to the game through post-launch sessions and updates. This is in contrast to Overwatch 2 before the Season 10 change.

Firewatch claims fans will get more details about Concord’s post-launch roadmap as the game nears launch. However, all the post-launch content will be free of cost, from new playable characters to new modes. The game will launch with six 5v5 game modes without any solo mode like a free-for-all, although the lineup will change over time. New features like a leaver penalty system are also in the works.
