Mortal Kombat 1 just came out in 2023 and while some fans are wondering about a sequel, all signs point to more DLC coming for the game instead.
Ed Boon made an appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con. The event brought big news source for fans of just about every game imaginable, including an abundance of news for the FGC. This includes Mortal Kombat 1, with Boon discussing the future of the game.
Shang Tsung and the first Kombat Pack have been released so far, bringing Homelander, Omni Man, Peacemaker, and more to the roster. The next update is Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns, which comes out September 24. That expansion will bring guest characters including Conan the Barbarian and reimaginings of Mortal Kombat favorites including new versions of Sektor and Cyrax. There’s also confirmation that a Khaos Reigns story expansion is coming.
But is that all there is for the game? Ed Boon has given a bit of news about potential updates to the game.
Will Mortal Kombat 1 get more DLC after Khaos Reigns and Kombat Pack 2?
Ed Boon strongly suggested that more DLC will come out for MK1 after the release of the Khaos Reigns expansion.
Boon discussed Mortal Kombat 1’s future at San Diego Comic-Con. He stated that there are years of new content in the works including some DLC for next year. There have been no set release dates, however.
“We had Mortal Kombat 11, Aftermath, and then Ultimate. So we kept adding characters, adding story, so that’s kind of like the way we’re doing our games now. We were pretty sure when we launched Mortal Kombat 1 that we were going to be doing years of content, so this is year two,” Boon said.
Mortal Kombat 11 had 13 DLC characters and Mortal Kombat 1 will reach that count between the first two DLC packs.
Will there be a Mortal Kombat 1 sequel?
A sequel to Mortal Kombat 1 will likely come out at some point, but it’s unlikely that it will arrive any time soon.
Boon’s declaration at San Diego Comic-Con means there’s likely DLC planned for MK1 that will keep the game chugging for years. This means there probably won’t be a new game for some time as developers focus on new content for the existing title.
There’s still plenty of story ground to cover, with the game effectively introducing a Mortal Kombat multiverse. Introducing reimagined versions of existing characters will also maintain fan interest. While fans remain torn on the tag-fighting system, MK1 seems ready to stick around regardless.
