Fans worried about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 coming to PS4 and Xbox One can rest easy, at least for the time being.
The current console generation is in its third year at this point and many fans are wondering if Call of Duty will leave last-generation consoles behind. Many developers are already moving away from older consoles and focusing on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Popular games like Cyberpunk 2077 are releasing DLC but not for PS4 and Xbox One, while AAA titles like Final Fantasy 16 are true exclusives.
The large install base of the PS4 and Xbox One makes the consoles hard to ignore, especially for a popular shooter like Call of Duty. Thankfully, Sledgehammer Games is still bringing its latest military shooter to older consoles.
Is MW3 confirmed for PS4 and Xbox One?
Yes, Modern Warfare 3 is coming to PS4 and Xbox One. Both Sony and Microsoft have confirmed that the shooter will be available on past-generation consoles and the MW3 release date has been confirmed.
Xbox’s store page for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has the game listed for both Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S consoles. A YouTube video on the PlayStation channel confirms a PS4 release as well.
The worries started when both old-generation consoles were not listed as release platforms on the official Call of Duty page. The error isn’t corrected at the time of writing, but the confirmation from Sony and Xbox both confirm the release on past-gen consoles.
How will MW3 perform on old-gen?
MW3 performance is yet to be disclosed for both the current and old generation of consoles.
The original Modern Warfare 3 from 2011 was released during the console generation transition. The game’s performance on PS3 and Xbox 360 showed marked differences from the PS4 and Xbox One, with frame rate issues and missing features.
Modern Warfare 2 (2022) ran smoothly on PS4 and Xbox One consoles with few frame rate hiccups. Despite graphics that were criticized by fans, the game ran at close to 60 frames per second. Player progress from MW2 will also carry over to MW3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 beta is expected to hit PlayStation consoles first.
