Black Myth: Wukong was released to a staggering number of players and even dethroned Palworld to become the second-most-played game in Steam history and the most-played single-player title on the platform. The game was one of the most hyped games of 2024 and was also surrounded by controversy, so fans were apprehensive, but the influx of players will cement it as a success regardless.
While Wukong was set to be launched for Xbox alongside PlayStation 5 and PC, the Xbox version was delayed. Microsoft announced that the game will not be released simultaneously as the PS5 and PC due to optimization issues. Now, fans want to know when Black Myth: Wukong will be released on Xbox, and a Microsoft spokesperson gave fans more information.
Is Black Myth: Wukong a PS5 exclusive?
Black Myth: Wukong is not a PlayStation 5 exclusive, though Xbox has suggested this is the case.
The game launched simultaneously on PS5 and PC, and developers have suggested that and Xbox release is coming. While a Microsoft statement was worded to suggest there was PS5 exclusivity for the game, there’s Game Science has consistently indicated this isn’t the case.
“We’re excited for the launch of Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox Series X/S and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms. We can’t comment on the deals made by our partners with other platform holders, but we remain focused on making Xbox the best platform for gamers, and great games are at the center of that,” the statement reads.
PlayStation has tendered timed exclusivity for major third-party releases including Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Zenless Zone Zero. This has many thinking that Black Myth: Wukong may be a PS5 timed exclusive, though it’s unclear if this is actually the case. Many third-party releases, particularly those from Asian studios, are simply opting to not release games on Xbox as Microsoft pulls marketing and support out of the region. It’s also possible that the game is the latest title to struggle with the underpowered Xbox Series S.
Regardless, Game Science has indicated that Black Myth: Wukong is not a PS5 exclusive on multiple occasions.
When will Black Myth: Wukong be released on Xbox?
It is unknown when it will come out, but Microsoft says it is working with Game Science to bring Black Myth: Wukong to Xbox Series X/S.
Game Science has stated that it is optimizing the Xbox version of Black Myth: Wukong to meet its quality standards. While the company assured fans that it would try to minimize the waiting for Xbox players, it didn’t give a definite release date.
While it wasn’t specified what the hiccup is, all signs point to it being related to Microsoft’s forced Xbox Series X/S parity. This saw the Xbox release of Baldur’s Gate 3 delayed for months, which was then followed by Microsoft automatically banning players who played it from Xbox Live.
