The latest ZZZ trailer confirms that the title will have temporary PlayStation console exclusivity, but will that window open the door for Xbox and Nintendo Switch releases?
Zenless Zone Zero is the latest HoYoverse game, with the same developers behind Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail breaking new thematic ground. The game had a lot of hype behind it and has largely lived up to it with tight gameplay and plenty of new twists to the gacha formula.
The biggest reason everyone loves ZZZ is the combat. The fighting in the game is flashy, responsive, and feels great, resulting in a rewarding combat loop. The game is also generous in giving players free premium currency and battery charges to allow progress.
Unfortunately, while gamers on PlayStation, PC, and mobile can enjoy the title, others are left on the outside looking in. That could potentially change, but will ZZZ wind up on the Xbox and Nintendo Switch?
When is ZZZ coming to Xbox and Switch?
PlayStation and MiHoYo confirmed that ZZZ could potentially come out on Nintendo and Xbox consoles in 2025.
Despite Zenless Zone Zero being out for a week, a “Launch Trailer” video was posted to the PlayStation YouTube channel on July 11. At the very end, the trailer includes surprise information regarding console exclusivity. It states that ZZZ is “unavailable on other consoles until at least six months after release date.”
This hypothetically means that ZZZ could end up on Nintendo Switch and Xbox consoles as soon as January 4, 2025. That doesn’t mean fans should mark their calendars, though. The end of console exclusivity doesn’t automatically mean the game will be available for other consoles or that MiHoYo is even looking to make this happen.
It could take longer than six months to develop a good port for the consoles. Though there are undoubtedly many Xbox and Nintendo Switch owners who would like to play ZZZ, one needs to only look at how Genshin Impact still isn’t found on non-PlayStation consoles four years after launch.
Why isn’t ZZZ on Xbox and Switch?
Sony has a console exclusivity agreement that makes Zenless Zone Zero a PlayStation 5 exclusive into 2025. It’s unclear whether MiHoYo is planning to release ZZZ or any other games on other consoles, however.
Previous big hitters from HoYoverse, Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail, are available only on PlayStation consoles. The same goes for competitor Wuthering Waves, which has a PlayStation 5 version in the works but no announced plans for Nintendo Switch or Xbox. If previous patterns hold, ZZZ might not reach a Microsoft or Nintendo console.
The six-month PlayStation 5 exclusivity deal is the same that was used for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. That RPG has yet to be released on an Xbox platform. In the meantime, players looking to play the game can do so on a PlayStation console, a mobile device, or a PC. They’ll need to hurry, as ZZZ gives free character pulls to early adopters.
