Arcane Season 2 shows us how new champion Ambessa will play

The character Ambessa Medarda from Arcane is coming to League of Legends, and fans finally know what she’ll look like and how she’ll play as a bona fide LoL champion

Ambessa Medarda was first seen in season one of Arcane, introduced as a Noxian warmistress and mother of Piltover Councilwoman Mel Medarda. During the two years between Arcane’s first and second seasons, Riot announced that Ambessa would become a champion in League of Legends. Now that we have our first official trailer for Arcane Season 2, we finally have an idea of what Ambessa will look like on Summoner’s Rift.

While fans didn’t get to see much of her, Ambessa repeatedly popped up, showing off both her personality and her combat skills. This teased what kind of weapons and abilities she’ll bring to the table.

Ambessa brings unchained and chained aggression with her LoL abilities

Ambessa will likely wield two chained axes as a League of Legends champion.

In the Arcane Season 2 trailer, fans get their first look at Ambessa Medarda in full war gear. Near the end of the trailer, there’s a shot of her, in a golden mask, wielding two axe-like blades attached by chains to great gauntlets. It’s all very OG Kratos, frankly.

In this scene, Ambessa has dropped her aristocratic Noxian wardrobe from earlier in the trailer for a simple and practical pugilist’s garb. Ambessa has been described as a tanky skirmisher, built for top lane, with a very high skill cap. These gauntlets are exactly the kind of signature weapon that Riot Games tries to find for characters, giving her a completely unique silhouette to any champion we’ve seen. Fans can expect Ambessa to be throwing chains around and skirmishing just like fellow chain-aficionado Sylas.

Ambessa Medarda

In the shot, she seems to be fighting Piltover Enforcers. This is an interesting twist, as initial footage made Ambessa and Medarda seem to be allying with Piltover, but perhaps this Noxian conqueror has come to the Twin Cities with other intentions in mind. Certainly, seeing Ambessa brawling with the police force of her host city wasn’t on Piltover’s plans. Behind her, we can see the masts of a Noxian tall ship.

What will happen with Ambessa in Arcane Season 2?

Ambessa is seemingly set to be a prominent figure in Arcane Season 2, with her acumen as a warrior and politician on display.

Ambessa sports a golden mask in the footage, one that seems similar to the masks worn by the Solari, the sun-worshipping people of Mount Targon. Gold is a strong motif for Ambessa and her daughter Mel, who sports a filigree golden armor that’s the source of much story speculation from fans this season. It certainly seems more and more likely that Ambessa Medarda was once associated with the Solari or the Rakkor, before her status as Noxian Warmaster. This light armor will likely be what Ambessa wears as a LoL champion.

Ambessa Talking

Further on, fans get shots of Ambessa in what seems to be a more casual garb, rallying Noxian soldiers to battle. The first shot is her, alone, glaring at something off-screen in a washed-out amber light.

Shortly after, we get a shot of Ambessa, iconic Noxian blade in hand, rallying Noxian footsoldiers. It’s unclear where this shot takes place, but another washed-out color palette would suggest somewhere in Zaun. Given that the Arcane writers summed up season two with the single word, “War”, it seems likely that Ambessa is going to put her warlord skills to the test against both Piltover and Zaun.

It seems like the masked and Kratos-esque version of Ambessa is the champion fans will be getting on Summoner’s Rift. She certainly has the flair, ridiculously weaponry, and silhouette to match plenty of LoL champions. Ambessa’s release date is unannounced as of yet, but Arcane Season 2 will premiere after the Grand Finals of the World Championships of League of Legends on November 2, 2024. In the meantime, LoL players can guess at which other champions will appear in Arcane Season 2.
