The previously leaked “Sonic Toys” game has been officially revealed as Sonic Rumble, but it still retains toys and Fall Guys-like gameplay.
Sonic Rumble is an online multiplayer mobile game that pits players against each other in a race. Sega is trying something new here but with the familiar Sonic speed. This game isn’t Sonic’s first rodeo on mobile devices, either. The speedy hedgehog has been running around on phones since 2011’s Sonic the Hedgehog port.
Recently, Sonic Dash and Sonic Dash 2 have become popular on Android and iOS due to their easy gameplay and free-to-play nature. They’ve been successful enough that Sega and its subsidiaries are making a larger push into mobile games.
The recent console game, 2022’s Sonic Frontiers, scored good reviews from fans and critics and marked the speedster’s return on home consoles. Sonic has seen as many genres as Mario, from kart racing to RPGs. This new “race royale” genre is still a new one for Sonic, though it looks to be a perfect fit.
Sonic Rumble release date info
Sonic Rumble is coming in Winter 2024 on Android and iOS, with a playtest beta starting this month.
Developer Rovio, the mobile game studio famous for making Angry Birds, is behind Sonic Rumble. Sega acquired Rovio for $775 million in 2023 and is putting the developer at work with the latest Sonic title. Sonic Rumble is the final version of a previously leaked game dubbed “Sonic Toys,” which saw footage of an early build posted on social media. The footage has since been taken down.
The trailer shows a 3D game with impressive-looking visuals, smooth animations, and detailed environments. In one instance, Sonic is seen rolling around a loop, changing the camera view to the side for the franchise’s signature look.
There is not yet an exact release date for Sonic Rumble. However, the third film in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie series will be released on December 24 so cross-promotion is a possibility.
How is Sonic Rumble’s gameplay?
Sonic Rumble takes cues from Fall Guys and pits 32 players against each other in a mission to be the last one standing.
Sega‘s latest Sonic mobile game uses toy figures instead of the bean-like characters used in Fall Guys. The basic premise remains simple: beat everyone in the race and cross the finish line first.
As the leaked trailer showed and the released trailer confirmed, plenty of Sonic characters are fighting to become the last one on the course. Sonic Rumble features all of the series’ most iconic characters including Sonic, Shadow, and Knuckles, as well as deeper cuts such as Vector the Crocodile and Espio the Chameleon.
Sonic fans in the United States won’t have to wait long to test the game. Sega has announced a beta from May 24 to May 26. Players who wish to play the beta can fill out an application before registrations close on May 19.
