Doom: The Dark Ages, the highly anticipated first-person shooter from id Software, was shown at QuakeCon, and early impressions have fans buzzing.
The eighth main game in the long-running franchise, Doom: The Dark Ages, is expected to arrive on consoles and PCs in 2025. With no set release date announced and just a single trailer, fans crave more details about the gory first-person shooter. The developers showed an extended look at the game at QuakeCon, but no recording was allowed.
The early impressions about Doom: The Dark Ages from QuakeCon are positive. A Reddit poster, POW_Studios, posted a couple of summaries on the Doom subreddit. The attendees received most of the changes coming to the game well.
Doom: The Dark Ages to move away from aerial combat
The poster claims that Doom: The Dark Ages features more “boots on the ground” combat, emphasizing parries and guarding.
Doom Eternal famously had plenty of aerial movement and combat moves that made the game faster. However, this made Doom Slayer feel too light on the feet and not like the hulking juggernaut in a suit fans love. The poster claims that jumping is similar to the mechanics of power armor in Fallout games: slow but impactful.
The Saw Shield can be used to traverse the map and can also be thrown at enemies. The shield deals damage over time to large enemies until it’s called back. Overall, all signs point to a slower, more systematic approach to combat. This has fans excited for the brutal power fantasy that Doom is known for.
Doom: The Dark Ages features revamped Glory Kills
The Glory Kill system has reportedly been reinvented and no longer features pre-animated moves depending on the attacks.
The new system displays a “purple halo” on enemies primed for a Glory Kill. Glory Kills are now more focused on kicks, punches, and any melee weapon the player is using. There are three melee weapons in Doom: The Dark Ages. The flail lets players collect ammunition, and the fist and mace can send an electric charge between enemies.
A new double-barrel plasma gun is also shown at the event. Both barrels fire at the same time and are connected together with a metal part. A single-barrel shotgun is also shown to the attendees. The nail gun shown in the reveal trailer has physical effects: Enemies get nailed to walls. There’s no word on whether id Software might release the footage online at a later date.
