Splitgate developer 1047 Games has officially announced Splitgate 2, the sequel to 2019’s “Halo with portals” with a sleek cinematic trailer and a confirmed release date.
When 1047 Games teased a new entry in the Splitgate universe, fans were sure it would be Splitgate 2, and that’s exactly what it was. The developer announced the release date and trailer of Splitgate 2 in a post made on X. The trailer does not show gameplay but includes new weapons, cosmetics, and hints at new mechanics.
It also mentions the release date of the game and the platforms for the game at launch. Here’s everything there is to know about how Splitgate 2 will play, and the when and where you’ll be able to try it out.
What’s new in Splitgate 2?
Splitgate 2 will be free-to-play at launch just like its original but it is built using Unreal Engine with new character models, maps, and weapons.
The developer intends to stick to the gameplay formula of the original and keep Splitgate 2 a familiar but improved experience. The sequel will remain a first-person shooter with four-on-four action. Once again, players can use portals and physics to execute unique strategies.
The strategic portal system that made it easier to move around the map is also in this entry but it has been “rethought.” However, there is not much information as to what will change so fans will have to wait for more details to surface as the game nears its launch.
The main difference between the original and Splitgate 2 is the introduction of three new factions. While the trailer didn’t disclose much about this, the factions are customized according to the different gameplay styles.
Another key change that fans will see in Splitgate 2 is better maps. According to an interview with IGN, 1047 Games CEO Ian Proulx somehow “ended up as the map designer somewhat by default” in the original game. However, the team hired professionals this time. The developer also plans to continuously update the game post-launch and a bigger team should help with that.
Splitgate 2 release date and platforms info
Splitgate 2 will be released at some point in 2025. An exact release date was not confirmed.
The announcement that Splitgate 2 was being developed through Unreal Engine 5 gave fans the idea that it wouldn’t be playable on last-gen consoles. However, that isn’t the case as the cinematic trailer revealed that Splitgate 2 will be playable on the current and last generation of consoles. Splitgate 2 will be released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via the Epic Games Store and Steam.
The original Splitgate was created in a dorm room with a low budget but after the huge success, its sequel has a much larger team and a substantially larger budget. Though Splitgate will forever be infamous for remaining in a permanent beta test, Splitgate 2 likely won’t suffer the same fate.
