1047 Games has teased a new entry in the Splitgate universe and fans think it might be Splitgate 2.
Splitgate 1 was released as a beta in 2019 and was so successful that the influx of players caused server issues, resulting in an indefinite delay. While Splitgate never officially came out of its beta stage, fans have been waiting for more from 1047 Games. Speculation has centered around a Splitgate sequel, since the devs stopped updating Splitgate 1 in September 2022.
The wait might be over soon, as the Splitgate developers teased an announcement on its X account. While it’s not confirmed that the new addition to the Splitgate universe will be Splitgate 2 and not a spin-off, players already have information on what the next Splitgate game will bring to the table.
Splitgate 2 might be revealed soon by 1047 Games
Splitgate’s developers teased an announcement that has many speculating that it will reveal a new game soon.
The Splitgate developers have posted a series of teases on X regarding an announcement on July 18, 2024. The announcement might be the previously announced Splitgate sequel. The 9-second video and the caption don’t give much detail and only repeat the same phrase “In 3 days, you are mine.” The official Splitgate website has also been reworked to show a countdown for the announcement.
Luckily, fans of the series have some prior information to go on. 1047 Games had previously announced it was working on the next game in the Splitgate universe, although it wasn’t outright stated to be a sequel. The game was being developed in Unreal Engine 5, which opened the door for a graphical upgrade after the original was made in Unreal Engine 4. The expectation is that the game will be free-to-play and will likely have the same portal mechanics the original Splitgate is known for.
What platforms will Splitgate 2 be playable on?
It’s unknown what platforms the Splitgate sequel is in development for, as its release comes at an awkward time in the current console generation.
The first game was released on PC in 2019, which was followed by an Xbox One and PlayStation 4 release in 2021. This was then followed a year later by ports for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. 1047 Games ceased development on Splitgate later on in 2022.
The potential Splitgate 2 being made in Unreal Engine 5 makes it unclear whether the game will appear on past-gen consoles. Unreal Engine 5 is mainly tailored to modern gaming hardware including the PS5 and Xbox series consoles. Other online multiplayer-focused games made in Unreal Engine 5 such as The Finals and Smite 2 passed on the PS4 and Xbox One. Fortnite runs in Unreal Engine 5 and PUBG: Battlegrounds is set to be ported to the engine, and there’s no sign of PS4 or Xbox One support ending.
This suggests, 1047 Games could potentially optimize the Splitgate sequel to work on the PS4 and Xbox One. However, odds are that Splitgate 2 would be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S exclusively.
