Monster Hunter Wilds is shaping up to be the franchise’s biggest game, and Capcom is showing off new mechanics, including the focus mode.
The Monster Hunter series is considered one of the most challenging video games ever, sometimes surpassing boss fights in Elden Ring. However, Capcom has been making the games more accessible with sound mechanics that help hunters out. The first step was the tenderizing mechanic in Monster Hunter World, and then came the wirebug in Rise. The latest game, Monster Hunter Wilds, is bringing focus mode.
With each new installment in the long-running franchise, Capcom has made the game more accessible and easier to manage. Gone are the “crab claw” controls of the PlayStation Portable; now, players have complete and comfortable control over their characters. The new focus mode aims to give even more control to the hunters, letting them land attacks precisely where they want.
Monster Hunter Wilds’ focus mode set to boost melee weapons
Focus mode can make melee weapons OP by giving you complete control over where they land. This will make using heavy and slow weapons a lot easier.
Previously, players had to estimate where the attack might land. So, missing the monster completely was normal, especially at the start. Repositioning, relocating, and facing the monster were essential in consistently dealing damage in past Monster Hunter games. With the new focus mode mechanic, players know exactly where the attack will land. The mode also executes attacks where the camera is facing, not the player, making it a lot easier to land multiple attacks.
Additionally, the focus mode highlights any weak and critical spots on a monster. No guesswork won’t be involved in Monster Hunter Wilds, especially when using a greatsword, hammer, and longsword.
New wound mechanic will deal more damage
Another new mechanic in Monster Hunter Wilds is the wound mechanic, which deals more damage to a wounded part.
The wounded mechanic is much simpler than the tenderized system in Monster Hunter Worlds. Damaging a certain part makes it wounded; it helps even more if the wounded part is also a critical spot.
Hitting a part repeatedly wounds it, leading to more damage. Combine wounds with focus mode, and players can quickly deal a lot of damage to enemies. Another mechanic, focus attacks, aims to deliver even more damage to monsters. It can also be used with ranged weapons, as shown in the trailer. Monster Hunter Wilds has a 2025 release date locked in.
