Leakers believe they have uncovered Bungie’s plans for Destiny 2 DLC after The Final Shape, and they may not be popular with some fans.
Bungie’s struggles continue to play out in public, with the company announcing another round of layoffs mere weeks after the release of The Final Shape, Destiny 2’s biggest story DLC to date. The latest hemorrhage of developers saw Bungie sack 220 employees. Bungie also shifted some employees into mystery projects within Sony.
Many fans of the once-beloved game studio have grown cynical of the company’s direction for a while. Fans perceived the increasing focus on “player engagement” with padded content and live-service chores as a detriment, and the layoffs of key figures didn’t help stifle those sentiments. Even so, reports claim Destiny 2 still has a future, albeit a smaller one than expected.
Will Destiny 2 receive DLC after The Final Shape?
Destiny 2 will reportedly receive small-scale DLC with minimal story and a focus on seasonal content.
Multiple reports from different sources paint a scaled-down picture of Destiny 2’s future. Giantbomb’s Jeff Grubb reported that Bungie canceled a Destiny spin-off codenamed Payback early into development. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier corroborated these claims and clarified Payback was never Destiny 3.
A notable Destiny leaker known as “Liz” claims to have found details on Destiny 2’s future DLC plans. Bungie will reportedly structure Destiny 2 around two seasons and two DLC packs annually. Narratives will be significantly cut down, with only a single intro mission explaining the context for the season and character banter throughout the rest.
Each season will feature two events, seasonal weapons, and activities with better rewards. Overall, the alleged direction for Destiny 2 will focus on the type of content many Destiny 2 players hate. Given the positive reception to The Final Shape’s story focus and engaging content, a potential shift to DLC that features neither raised more than a few eyebrows.
Is Destiny 2 dead?
Destiny 2 still boasts tens of thousands of concurrent players and is set to have developer support for some time.
The Final Shape saw Destiny 2 receive its highest player count since March 2023, breaking into an average of over 120,000 players daily. However, the average player count dropped by half after the DLC’s release, according to Steam Charts.
While Bungie hasn’t released sales figures for The Final Shape, the DLC did receive critical acclaim, particularly for its story. However, the narrative lead of The Final Shape, Kwan Perng, still joined the layoffs from Bungie. Given the alleged lack of story focus in future Destiny 2 DLC, story fans may leave Destiny 2 in droves.
