Here’s how the new League of Legends loot box odds really work

Jinx in League of Legends

A new loot box system for League of Legends skins dropped with the release of an “Exalted” Jynx skin but players might have trouble wrapping their heads around how it works; and their real price without the gacha trickiness.

Riot Games introduced “luxury goods” back in December 2023, and every item described that way has attracted controversy. The “generously” priced $500 Faker Ahri skin sparked heated debate among fans, discussing whether such prices were predatory. Regardless, Riot didn’t back down from providing luxury items to the players who want, and more importantly, can afford them.

In October 2024, Riot revealed an Arcane-themed skin for Jinx at a new tier; exalted. Riot Games said it initially considered providing the skin for players at a set price, as is tradition. However, it instead introduced a new gacha system called the Sanctum, with its own brand of RNG.

How do exalted skin odds work in League of Legends?

The odds of pulling an exalted skin in League of Legends’ Sanctum is 1.5%, technically. The actual odds of pulling one is considerably lower.

That’s because the Sanctum uses a “pity” system almost identical to games like Genshin Impact and Zenless Zone Zero.

The drop rate for exalted skins in League of Legends is 0.5%, with a guaranteed pull within 80 attempts. In theory, this raises the rate to 1.5%. Players must spend 400 RP each on Ancient Sparks to roll for new cosmetics.

Many players expressed disappointment and frustration towards Riot for introducing a gacha system into League of Legends. For all of its microtransactions, Riot always stood out to fans thanks to its commitment to letting people buy skins and characters directly. However, the Sanctum means gacha mechanics have come for people’s wallets.

With the addition still fresh, only time will tell if the Sanctum becomes a staple of the League of Legends economy. One thing’s for certain, though. It’s around to stay unless it’s a major financial flop for Riot.

How much do exalted skins cost in League of Legends?

Players are guaranteed to get an exalted skin in League of Legends after spending 32,000 RP, though there’s a chance of getting lucky before then.

Exalted skins are considered S-tier content, and the new Arcane Season 2-themed Jinx is the first one to arrive in the game. At A-tier, players get non-exalted skins, chromas, and banners. The lowest tier, B-tier, only gives players Mythic Essence, icons, and emotes. In practice, getting an exalted skin will cost somewhere in the ballpark of 32,000 RP.

With current RP costs, this means the exalted Jinx skin will cost the player around $250 unless they happen to get lucky. This is about half of what the controversial Faker Ahri skin cost. While the potential for an earlier get does exist, it’s still quite the investment for players.
