Serial Valve leaker Gabe Follower has posted a video that supposedly confirms the existence of Half-Life 3 using existing code in current Valve games.
Half-Life 3 has become a running joke in the gaming community. With Half-Life 2 episode 2 long-since released in 2007, it’s been a very long time since fans played as Gordon Freeman. Valve has been tight-lipped about the next installment of the single-player FPS juggernaut, but that hasn’t stopped the leaks and speculation.
Valve has seen plenty of leaks of late; new shooter/MOBA hybrid Deadlock leaked months before the game’s official announcement. Some Deadlock leaks also came from Gabe Follower, making his claims about Half-Life 3 that much more believable for hopeful fans. Here is what Gabe Follower found while data mining files.
Half-Life 3 may feature a semi-open world
Gabe Follower claims Half-Life 3 will be an FPS with a semi-open world and a dynamic weather system.
The levels in Half-Life 2 ranged from small to huge, and some even let players control vehicles to get around more quickly. It seems Half-Life 3 is keeping some of those same map design principles in mind and sticking with what worked before. The data mined files also indicate that Valve is focusing on the use of a day-night cycle. Players may have access to a hub area that can be visited freely throughout the campaign.
The leaker also found interesting facts about the game’s NPCs, claiming they’ll be smarter than ever before and could even talk to the player. The datamined code hints towards the enemies using advanced tactics such as retreating, using shields, and giving signals to faraway snipers.
There is no official confirmation from Valve regarding Half-Life 3 just yet.
Half-Life 3 may focus on gravity like in Half-Life: Alyx
Half-Life 3, apparently code-named HLX, would be a direct continuation of Half-Life: Alyx, a VR game in which gravity plays an important role.
According to Gabe Follower’s sources, Half-Life 3 began development as a VR game but later switched to standard traditional displays. The leaker also suggests that the player will wear the iconic H.E.V. suit and use a gravity gun. A string found in the DOTA 2 code, “HEVSuit.PlugDetach,” indicates a return of Half-Life’s famous health and power stations.
There are plenty of mentions of gravity and a gravity gun in the discovered code. “+physcannon_maxforce” and “physcannon_minforce” indicate the variable nature of a gravity gun. Gravity would be critical in Half-Life 3 as laid out here as it would impact the entire game environment. Lines referencing level creation and AI navigation under the influence of altered gravity can also be found.
Gabe Follower ends their video by claiming players will again visit Xen, the mysterious space featured in the original Half-Life game’s climax.
