During the latest Sonic Central showcase, Sega announced a surprise collaboration with DC Comics on some new Sonic the Hedgehog-related projects.
Sonic x Shadow Generations is on the horizon, but that’s not the only crossover coming up. The collaboration was, in fact, teased on September 21. As part of DC’s annual Batman Day celebrations, Sega’s official social media channels uploaded a short animation featuring Shadow the Hedgehog dressed up as DC’s Dark Knight. At the time, some fans suspected this wasn’t a one-off oddity and was actually a hint at something bigger. It turns out they were right.
Details about the collaboration are still scarce, but Ivo Gerscovich, the chief business and brand officer for the Sonic franchise, was able to confirm a few things. Specifically, when the collaboration will start and what sort of content it will feature.
When does the Sonic the Hedgehog x DC Comics collaboration start?
The Sonic x DC Comics collaboration is slated to start in March 2025.
According to Gerscovich, though, this won’t be a short-lived event that will only last a month. The collab will be running not just through the remainder of 2025, but into 2026 as well. This suggests Sega and DC have a lot more content in the pipeline beyond the few bits and pieces Gerscovich confirmed during Sonic Central.
Fans will have lots to look forward to, especially those who have some space on their mantel.
What will be included in the Sonic x DC collab?
The Sonic the Hedgehog x DC Comics collaboration is set to include a comic mini-series and a variety of merchandise including toys, collectibles, apparel, and accessories. This new merch wasn’t officially revealed, but will likely be shown off ahead of the start date.
Before that, though, there will be a monthly five-issue comic series starting in March 2025, written by Ian Flynn, lead writer on the Sonic IDW comics. The reveal suggests that Sonic and his friends meet the Justice League.
On top of that, a handful of Sonic characters will be re-imagined as DC Comics characters, complete with costumes. Aside from Shadow as Batman, Gerscovich shared first looks at Sonic as the Flash, Tails as Cyborg, Knuckles as Superman, Amy as Wonder Woman, and Silver as the Green Lantern. A collection of all five issues will also become available after the series wraps.
So far, that’s all Gerscovich was willing to share but with the collab running for a year or more, there’s plenty more that could be revealed down the line. More comics? Animations? An entire game? Maybe not that last one.
Alongside Sonic x Shadow Generations, Sonic Rumble’s release is coming before the end of 2024. That’s alongside a Sonic Frontiers sequel and possible remasters of other games in the franchise.
