Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 will run on all consoles at 30 FPS and Xbox is to blame.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a grounded, open-world RPG set in the Holy Roman Empire. Its realistic nature has garnered praise from critics and gamers alike. Every aspect of the game is rooted in reality, from the difficult lock-picking to archery. The main protagonist, Henry, learns and hones his skills as the game progresses, immersing players.
While Kingdom Come: Deliverance garnered solid reviews on PC, that wasn’t the case on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Even last-generation’s upgraded consoles, the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, struggled to run the game at a stable FPS. Some areas in the game completely tanked performance with hectic cities resulting in consistent frame rate and pacing issues. The sequel, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, is looking to head that off with a 30 FPS lock.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has 30 FPS lock, even on PS5, due to Xbox Series S
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is set to have a 30 FPS lock across all consoles due to the hardware limitations of the Xbox Series S.
During the Game Access Conference in Brno, Czech Republic, game producer Martin Klíma confirmed that the Xbox Series S hindered the game’s scope. The producer further elaborated that the Xbox Series S console’s limitations directly impacted Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s development by restricting the game’s file size.
The lower hardware specifications of the smaller and cheaper current-gen Xbox only allowed the developers to make the sequel 25% bigger than the first game. Chief among the reasons is the 10 GB of RAM on the console.
Other developers have also raised concerns about the Xbox Series S holding current-generation game development back. Microsoft pushes for “feature parity” between both Series consoles. This makes it mandatory to release a game on both consoles at the same time. Baldur’s Gate 3 famously delayed the Xbox release to make the Series S version play better. With the release date rumored to be arriving soon, players won’t have to wait long to know how the game runs on the Xbox Series S.
What’s the best platform to play the game on?
The PC version of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 will likely be the best way to play the game.
This is, in part, because the game targets 4K resolution at 30 frames per second for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions.
The producer also mentioned that the game is already running above 30 frames, even at this early stage of development. Warhorse Studios must’ve prioritized optimization after the first game’s technical and graphical issues. It’s unclear whether the game will run at native 4K resolution or use upscaling techniques.
The first game also had trouble running on lower-end PCs, but a sufficiently powerful PC could brute force through the hitches. A powerful PC would be the best choice to enjoy Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 at high frame rates. However, the second-best choice could be a stable 30 FPS experience on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. It’s yet to be determined what resolution or frame rate the Xbox Series S will support.
