Sega and Disney are reportedly partnered for a new game coming in 2025 and fan speculation has ranged from classic Disney game remakes to a Kingdom Hearts-style crossover game starring Sonic the Hedgehog. But what’s the real story?

Disney’s foray into the gaming scene has led to partnerships with hundreds of studios through the years. Although Disney once developed games in-house, the media conglomerate now licenses out its many IPs to studios both big and small, which has seen games ranging from Star Wars Jedi to Kingdom Hearts to Disney Dreamlight Valley.

Sega and Disney have partnered up on multiple occasions over the decades. Every Disney game developed for the Genesis was published by Sega. Sonic the Hedgehog himself has appeared in the video game film franchise Wreck-It Ralph while Ralph returned the favor. These collaborations prove the partnership has stayed healthy between the two studios.

Now, Sega and Disney will reportedly collaborate for a new mobile game, and there’s speculation abound on what it could be.

Is Sega developing a Sonic x Disney crossover game?

Sega and Disney have not confirmed a Sonic x Disney crossover game.

Notable Sega leaker Midori, who accurately leaked news of Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 Tactica before official announcements, reported that Sega has partnered with Disney on a brand-new mobile game. There are no other details thus far.

One of the most popular speculations is a crossover game in the vein of Sonic & Sega All-Stars but with Disney characters included. Disney has no qualms about crossing over with other properties, as the likes of Kingdom Hearts, Wreck-it Ralph, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit can attest to. It’s also possible that Sega could make a Disney-only crossover title akin to Disney Dreamlight Valley.

The news comes alongside reports of a significant increase in Sega’s focus on mobile titles. Though the publisher maintains a strong presence on consoles, which includes a potential slate of Sonic Remakes, the company has already revealed a number of major mobile releases. There have also been leaks related to a number of other Sega titles including the.upcoming Sonic Toys, a Shin Megami Tensei game, and a revival of the Sega All-Stars franchise.

Is Sega developing remakes of Disney Genesis games?

Sega and Disney have not confirmed remakes of classic Disney Genesis games and it’s unlikely this is the case.

Disney and Sega have collaborated on remakes before. Disney released a remake of “Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse” in 2013, developed by the now-defunct Sega Studios Australia. Although the game initially launched for PC and consoles, it was eventually ported to Android and iOS. This would also fit into Sega’s revival plans of older franchises like Jet Set Radio.

However, recent remaster projects from Disney like Disney Classic Games Collection, which included the Sega-published Aladdin game for the Genesis, were developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Disney Interactive Studios. If the plan was for a mobile port of classic games, Disney may not actually need to rope Sega into it.
