Risk of Rain 2 launched in 2020 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game has garnered a solid following, in large part thanks to its mod-friendly PC version. However, recent PEGI ratings suggest the roguelike might come to next-gen consoles soon and usher in a new wave of fans.
The game has officially received ratings for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, suggesting a next-gen update with improved graphics and framerates is inbound with an upcoming release date. While the developer hasn’t announced the upgraded versions yet, previous games getting leaked by ratings boards give fans an idea of when they can expect to see them.
Is Risk of Rain 2 coming out on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S?
PEGI gave Risk of Rain 2 an official age rating on April 30, 2024 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, effectively confirming that the games are set to be released on the platforms.
The PS5 and Xbox Series consoles don’t have official ports for Risk of Rain 2, even if the game’s playable on current-generation consoles through backward compatibility. Currently, the game only has native PS4, Xbox One, Stadia, Nintendo Switch, and PC versions.
The next-gen versions may receive next-gen patches, though this is not confirmed. Games like The Witcher 3, Fallout 4, and Outer Wilds have all received updates for the newer consoles with framerate and resolution bumps while adding options between performance and fidelity modes. Other possible additions include texture upgrades and ray-tracing support.
It’s currently unknown if all existing owners of Risk of Rain 2 will get the next-gen versions for free or if there will be a price to upgrade their games.

There aren’t any leaks or hints about when the game may come out, but the game originally released on August 11, 2020. In theory, once a game is cleared by rating boards, it can launch in their market immediately. Official news often follows a ratings board leak, as was seen with Shin Megami Tensei 5 Vengeance. If this trend continues, it’s fair to assume that Risk of Rain 2’s upcoming ports will see an announcement soon.
With both the Summer Game Fest and June Xbox showcase slated to be streamed in June, the developers won’t have a shortage of opportunities to announce the upgraded versions of Risk of Rain 2. This could also be the first Gearbox release following the studio’s split from previous parent company Embracer Group.
