Stardew Valley 1.6 changed a lot about the game and Clay is once again a frustratingly scarce resource in the game, but there are some methods for farming it.
Everything has a purpose in Stardew Valley and Clay is a great demonstration of that. Players will often be disappointed seeing it when they crack open a Geode or dig into an artifact spot. That changes when players advance deeper into the game and need to start stocking up on high-quality fertilizer.
But Geodes and artifact spots aren’t particularly easy to come by. So how can players get an abundance of Clay in Stardew Valley 1.6, and is there any reliable method for farming it? The answers are unlikely to make players happy.
How to get Clay
Clay can be acquired in Stardew Valley 1.6 through a variety of methods, most of which just boil down to “playing the game.”
Most of the Clay that players will acquire comes from using the Hoe on dirt or sand. Each tile that gets tilled has a small chance of yielding one piece of Clay.
Alongside this, the resource is considered a “bad” result for a number of different RNG-based events. Clay has a high chance of appearing when breaking Geodes with Clint or digging up artifact spots around Pelican Town.
Players who have advanced deep into the game can also find dedicated Clay nodes across Ginger Island. These nodes appear like brown rocks throughout the area, and give guaranteed clay when broken. Of course, reaching Ginger Island is a late-game affair for players, meaning many won’t be able to take advantage of this.
Fastest ways to farm Clay in Stardew Valley 1.6
The fastest way to get Clay in Stardew Valley after the 1.6 update is to use Mega Bombs on large plots of dirt or sand. The best place to do this is the beach, where there is a huge plot of tillable sand with few obstructions.
The actual farm area for players may also work, depending on which type of farm the players are using. The meadowlands farm and some others work in this regard, but players won’t be able to effectively farm Clay on the riverlands farm.

The RNG exploit method for farming Clay was removed in Stardew Valley 1.6. In version 1.5, players were able to get near-guaranteed drops by digging in a certain pattern after finding one piece of Clay. This no longer works in Stardew Valley 1.6. Instead, the fastest way to get an abundance of Clay in Stardew Valley 1.6 is digging up soil.
Players can still use the RNG exploit method for farming Clay by enabling Legacy Randomization. Legacy Randomization retains some of the RNG manipulation methods that existed in Stardew Valley 1.5 and earlier. Similar to world seeds, Legacy Randomization is only available when creating a new farm and cannot be freely toggled on or off.
This means players who want to farm an abundance of Clay will need to do it the old-fashioned way. Or just blow up the beach.
