State of Play 2026: The biggest games that could be shown

Sony is set to outline the future of the PlayStation brand on June 2 with the State of Play and we already have a good idea of what’s going to be in there.

E3 may be gone but some of the biggest companies in gaming keep the tradition alive. Sony is one of them, kicking off the summer in recent years with a flashy show of its upcoming games and hardware. That tradition will continue in 2026.

Here’s what is confirmed to be coming in the June 2, 2026 State of Play event, and what else might be on tap.

What will be at the June 2026 State of Play?

Sony has confirmed that the State of Play will prominently feature Marvel’s Wolverine. The upcoming title from Insomniac Games is one of the few true PlayStation 5 exclusives the console has lined up, and was subject to one of the biggest leaks in gaming industry history.

Fans got an early look at the game in 2023 when a ransomware attack on Insomniac Games leaked an early build of the game alongside concept art and other materials. This gave fans a look at both gameplay and other X-Men heroes and villains who will appear.

Marvel’s Wolverine is also the biggest first-party title on the PlayStation 5, and it’s also set to be a proper PlayStation 5 exclusive with Sony reportedly dialing back on its plans to port games to PC. Naturally, it won’t be alone.

June 2026 State of Play will likely feature other major upcoming releases

The State of Play event is set to be a long one, with Sony confirming that it will be “more than 60 minutes.” That means that there’s going to be a lot more to it than just Marvel’s Wolverine. There’s little word on what, exactly, will be shown off. The most likely candidates are major multi-platform releases that have been officially revealed, or heavily rumored. Here are some of the most likely candidates.

Kingdom Hearts 4, Dragon Quest 12, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3

Since releasing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth more than two years ago, Square Enix has had few major original releases. Outside of Octopath Traveler 2 and 0, most of the publisher’s biggest releases have been ports or remasters.

There are, however, three major projects confirmed by the company. Dragon Quest 12 and Kingdom Hearts 4 were officially confirmed in 2021 and 2022, respectively. The final installment in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is also set to come out in the future. Little has been said about any of these games however, outside of bits regarding FF7 Remake Part 3’s gameplay and story details on Kingdom Hearts 4.

At present, the only confirmed upcoming game from Square Enix is The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, which launches in June. Odds are that some manner of update regarding one of these other projects will come soon.

Resident Evil Requiem DLC or Resident Evil – Code: Veronica remake

Resident Evil is white hot right now, with Resident Evil Requiem garnering great reviews. While the next release in the series would’ve been a big deal regardless, Capcom may look to build momentum in the State of Play.

Most recent Resident Evil games have received significant DLC releases, both in terms of new story content and silly mini-games. Leon Must Die Forever checks the latter box, but something akin to Resident Evil 4: Separate Ways or Rresident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose may be revealed here. The same goes for an official unveiling of the next Resident Evil remake, which is reportedly going to be Resident Evil 0 or Code: Veronica.

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophecy

Behind Marvel’s Wolverine, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophecy is likely the biggest first-party PS5 exclusive that Sony has. The next game from Naughty Dog was revealed in December 2024 and little has been confirmed about the game since. The game hasn’t been seen since, but this is an ideal landing spot for a story trailer or release date reveal.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced

The long-awaited remake of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag isn’t a PlayStation exclusive, but it’s likely to get some shine during State of Play. That’s because the director of the game, Richard Knight, stated in an interview that the game will take advantage of the PS5 Pro.

The PS5 Pro has been a fairly controversial refresh console, due to its exorbitant price tag and the limited value it provides those who buy in. A proper AAA release actively embracing the PS5 Pro’s PSSR 2 upscaling tech actually offers some players a reason to consider the pricy console.

Grand Theft Auto 6

Even without a price point or release date, GTA6 looms on the horizon. The good news for Sony is that with Xbox effectively dead and no PC port coming for the foreseeable future, GTA6 is effectively a PS5 exclusive.

The one thing holding this idea back is that Rockstar may not want to have a new GTA6 trailer shuffled into a State of Play event. Another look at GTA6 is an event unto itself, and the company knows it. Still, Sony may pull some levers and cut some checks to have the upcoming title featured here.
