The best choice for a new Resident Evil remake isn’t what you think

There are loads of possibilities when it comes to which Resident Evil will get the next remake, but the real question is “which one should get the honor?”’

While some gamers might bristle at the sheer number of remakes and remasters coming out these days, few will debate that Capcom is making it work. Remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 4 were legitimate game of the year candidates while the Resident Evil 3 remake was solid in its own right, albeit short. That hot streak adds some universal appeal to the games, beyond just fans wanting to relive their favorites.

The trouble is that there have been rumors and reports regarding three different Resident Evil games getting a remake. So what’s the deal with those games, and which titles should Capcom remake?

Resident Evil 0, 1, 5, and Code Veronica all reportedly being remade, but which is true?

Four different Resident Evil titles with varying degrees of popularity are reportedly being remade, though leakers disagree about which ones are actually coming.

Dusk Golem is a notable leaker who has primarily focused on horror games, particularly the Resident Evil series. In 2025, they stated that Resident Evil 0 and Code Veronica were both in line for an overhaul. They added that it was unclear which would come out first, but that one would come out in 2027 and the other would come out in 2028.

Alongside this were denials related to remakes for the original Resident Evil and RE5.

Various fan groups and other entities claimed that a Resident Evil 1 remake was in the works. This would take the over-the-shoulder gameplay of the other remakes and apply it to the game’s original setting.

Around the same time, Capcom began adjusting the Steam page for Resident Evil 5. This, combined with story teases related to Resident Evil 5 in the RE4 Remake DLC, led to speculation that a Resident Evil 5 was next.

Thus far, there’s no indication from Capcom that any of these games are actually set to receive a remake. All have some level of appeal in this regard, but the overall best option for the next remake is one that isn’t being discussed at all.

Resident Evil 6 is the game that most needs a remake

Capcom has been churning out such high-quality games in recent years that basically anything would be a treat. That said, there’s only one clear pick when it comes to picking out which game actually needs a remake.

The HD re-releases of Resident Evil 1 and Resident Evil 0 for the GameCube remain generally strong by any measure. Code Veronica and Resident Evil 5 are both rough around the edges, but are generally solid representatives for their era.

The game that truly needs a remake is Resident Evil 6.

Resident Evil 6 comfortably sits as the lowest-rated mainline title in the franchise according to review aggregators. That stems from game mechanics, level design, and multiplayer that just don’t mesh well together. While the game isn’t irredeemably bad, it’s an awkward one that fell during its tightrope walk between “survival horror” and “generic co-op shooter.”

A remake would finally let the game be more comfortable in one of those directions. There’s also plenty of fertile ground for polishing the overly campy story and aligning it with the animated Resident Evil films.

Resident Evil 6 has thus far steered clear of the discussion regarding the next remake. Ironically, that speaks to how badly the game needs a fresh coat of paint.
